How to Get to Playa de Platia Ammos

Getting to Playa de Platia Ammos is part of the adventure and, to be honest, the filter that maintains its wild and immaculate essence. We always recommend renting a car in Cephalonia, as it is the most comfortable and flexible way to explore the island. From Argostoli, the capital, the drive takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour, heading towards the Paliki peninsula in the west of the island. We will pass through Lixouri, a charming town with its own rhythm, and continue along secondary roads that will gradually reveal the rural beauty of Cephalonia.

Once we get close to the area, signs for the Kipoureon Monastery can serve as a reference, as the beach is located nearby. The road leading directly to the beach access point is narrow and winding in some sections, but passable. We will arrive at a small clearing at the top of the cliff, where it is possible to park the car for free. Don't expect an organized parking lot with barriers or attendants; it is simply a natural space set up for it. From here, the panoramic view is already a preview of what awaits us below.

The Descent: A Test for the Brave

And here comes the part that makes Playa de Platia Ammos so special and yet so exclusive: the descent. The beach is located at the foot of a cliff and access is via a long staircase. Before the 2014 earthquake, the staircase had over 300 well-built steps. However, the quake caused significant damage, destroying much of the structure. Although efforts have been made to rehabilitate it, the staircase remains rudimentary in some sections, with irregular steps, and sometimes collapsed or non-existent, forcing us to descend via steep and slippery dirt paths. This makes the journey demanding, especially on the way back, under the sun.

It is crucial to wear appropriate footwear, preferably sneakers or sandals with good grip, and avoid flip-flops at all costs. The path requires full attention and good physical condition. We do not recommend it for people with reduced mobility, very young children, or those not accustomed to hiking. But, believe us, every step downhill is an anticipation of the wonder, and every step uphill is a medal for a well-rewarded effort. The feeling of reaching the sand and seeing the sea spread out before us is indescribable, a true personal victory that adds value to the Cephalonia beach experience.

The Sand and Water

The most distinctive feature of Playa de Platia Ammos is, without a doubt, its composition. Here we will not find the typical golden sand of other Greece beaches. Instead, we are greeted by an extensive strip of white, polished pebbles of various sizes, which shine under the sun like small gems. These pebbles, combined with the depth and purity of the sea, are responsible for the incredible turquoise and aquamarine tones that make the water seem taken from a fairy tale. It is a visual spectacle that takes our breath away and invites us to dive in immediately.

The water at Playa de Platia Ammos is of astonishing clarity. We can see the seabed with exceptional clarity, even at several meters depth. It is a perfect place for snorkeling, as the visibility is excellent and, although the marine life may not be as lush as in other reefs, we can always observe small fish and interesting rock formations. The water temperature is generally pleasant during the summer months, refreshing and revitalizing after the effort of the descent.

As we venture into the sea, the pebbles gradually transform into a mix of sand and small stones, making the bottom comfortable for walking. The beach has a gentle slope in the first few meters, allowing for a relaxing swim, although the depth increases relatively quickly. The absence of large waves, thanks to the protection of the cliffs, makes this Playa de Platia Ammos a haven of peace ideal for swimming and floating without worries. It is a place where the sound of the waves kissing the pebbles is the only melody, a natural symphony that envelops us and invites us to the purest relaxation.
