Surrounded by lush vegetation of olive and cypress trees that stretch right to the water's edge, it offers much-appreciated natural shade during the hot summer days. The waters are a hypnotic turquoise, so clear that we can see the pebble bottom with astonishing ease. It is the perfect place for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle, immerse themselves in nature, and enjoy the simplicity of one of Cephalonia's most charming beaches.
How to Get to Playa de Foki
Getting to Playa de Foki is relatively straightforward, especially if we are in the northern part of Cephalonia. Its proximity to Fiskardo, one of the island's most iconic and visited villages, makes it an almost obligatory stop.
By Car or Scooter
Undoubtedly, the most comfortable way to get there is by car or scooter. From Fiskardo, the journey is just a few minutes heading south. The coastal road is scenic and well-maintained. We will find the beach on our left, and although there is no organized parking, it is common to park on the roadside just above the cove. We always recommend arriving early, especially in high season, to secure a good spot and avoid crowds.
By Bus
Although Cephalonia has a public bus service (KTEL), the routes are usually more limited and do not always go directly to small coves like Foki. It is possible to take a bus from Argostoli (the capital) to Fiskardo, and from there consider a taxi or even a short walk if we feel energetic. However, for greater flexibility and to explore the surroundings, a car or scooter is the best option.
On Foot from Fiskardo
If we are staying in Fiskardo and enjoy a walk, Playa de Foki is accessible on foot. It is a pleasant walk of about 15-20 minutes, gently descending along the road. It's a great way to enjoy the scenery and arrive at the beach already with an appetite for a good swim.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Foki is distinguished by its unique composition, which greatly contributes to its charm and the clarity of its waters. Here we will not find the fine, golden sand that characterizes other beaches, but a surface of smooth, rounded pebbles. These pebbles, of a pale white color, are very pleasant to the touch and do not stick to the skin like sand, making it much easier to clean off when leaving the water.
The seabed is also composed of these pebbles, which helps keep the water incredibly transparent. Despite its natural and relatively pristine atmosphere, Playa de Foki has the essential services that will allow us to enjoy a comfortable, worry-free day. It is important to remember that it is not a massively organized beach, and many of its amenities revolve around the presence of its famous taverna.
- Parking: As mentioned, parking is informal. We will find space to leave our car or scooter on the roadside just above the beach. It is free, but in high season it can fill up quickly. We always recommend caution when parking and when stepping onto the road.
- Beach Bars and Restaurants: The heart of the services at Foki is the Foki Taverna, a charming Greek restaurant located literally at the foot of the beach, under the shade of olive trees. Here we can enjoy authentic Greek food, fresh fish, salads, and refreshing drinks. Its location is unbeatable, offering spectacular sea views. It functions as a 'chiringuito', allowing us to enjoy a snack without moving far from the shore.
- Sunbeds and Umbrellas: The Foki Taverna itself usually offers sunbed and umbrella rentals to its customers. This is a great advantage, as it allows us to relax comfortably by the sea without having to carry our own equipment. Furthermore, the olive and cypress trees that grow right to the shore provide abundant natural shade, something highly valued on the hottest days.
- Toilets/WC: Toilets are available at the Foki Taverna for its customers. There are no separate public facilities on the beach, so the taverna is our best option.
