What first catches your eye upon arriving at Playa de Ai Helis is its distinctive dark golden, almost reddish sand in some spots, which contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of its waters. This beach, often awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, is known for its cleanliness, excellent services, and above all, for its shallow and calm waters, making it a favorite destination for families with young children. How to Get to Playa de Ai Helis

Getting to Playa de Ai Helis is relatively straightforward, which adds another point to its appeal, especially for those who value comfort on their vacation. We always recommend renting a car in Cephalonia, as it's the best way to explore the island at our own pace and discover its many hidden charms, including, of course, beaches like this one. Cephalonia Airport (EFL) is a short distance away, about 5-7 kilometers, which means we could be enjoying the sand and sea shortly after landing.

From Argostoli and the Airport

If we start from Argostoli, the capital of Cephalonia, the journey to Playa de Ai Helis is approximately 10-12 kilometers and usually takes about 15-20 minutes by car. The route is clear and well-signposted. Simply take the road towards the airport and, before reaching it, follow the signs to Svoronata or directly to Ai Helis. The roads in this part of the island are generally good, making the trip pleasant and picturesque, passing through small villages and olive groves.

From the airport, the distance is even shorter. After picking up our rental car, in just 10 minutes we'll be at the beach. The signs are equally clear, allowing for a quick and stress-free transition from the plane to the sand. It's one of the most accessible beaches from the main entry point to the island, which is a great advantage.

Public Transport and Other Options

Although a rental car is our preferred option for the flexibility it offers, it's also possible to reach Playa de Ai Helis using public transport, albeit with less frequency and perhaps requiring a short final walk. There are local buses connecting Argostoli with Svoronata and nearby villages, especially during the high season. However, the stops may not be right on the beach, so we might have to walk about 15-20 minutes from the nearest stop. It's always advisable to check the updated schedules at the Argostoli bus station (KTEL Kefalonia).

Another option, if we prefer not to drive, is to take a taxi. From Argostoli, the cost of a taxi to Ai Helis is reasonable, especially if we're traveling in a group, and it will drop us off right at the entrance to the beach. For the more adventurous, renting a motorcycle or a quad can also be a fun and efficient way to get there, allowing us to feel the sea breeze as we head to our beach destination.

Upon arrival, we'll find a large free parking area right behind the beach, which is a great advantage and avoids the stress of looking for parking, even on the busiest days. From the parking lot, a short path or stairs lead directly to the sand, facilitating access for all visitors, including those with baby strollers or people with reduced mobility thanks to the available ramps.

It's a fine and soft sand to the touch, making it incredibly pleasant to walk on barefoot or for children to play and build sandcastles.
