If there is a place in Karpathos that embodies the essence of virgin beauty and the purest tranquility, that is, without a doubt, Playa de Vananda. Located at the northern tip of the island, near the picturesque village of Diafani, Vananda is not a beach you stumble upon by chance. It is a destination for those seeking the reward of adventure, a sanctuary where time seems to stand still and nature reveals itself in its most pristine state. We, as lovers of beach tourism, consider it one of those pearls that, once discovered, are forever etched in memory.

Upon arriving at Playa de Vananda, the first impression is that of an immaculate natural canvas. Its waters, of an intense turquoise blue that borders on the unreal, gently kiss a shore of polished white and grey pebbles, which contrast wonderfully with the dark green of the pine trees clinging to the surrounding slopes. The pure air, imbued with the scent of pine and salt, and the rhythmic sound of the small waves, create an atmosphere of absolute peace. It is the kind of place where one can spend hours simply watching the horizon, feeling the sea breeze, and letting stress dissolve with each wave that breaks on the shore. Vananda is not just a beach; it is an experience, a spiritual retreat in the heart of the Aegean.

How to Get to Playa de Vananda

Getting to Playa de Vananda is part of the adventure and charm of this very special place in Karpathos. It is not an easily accessible beach, which contributes to its aura of exclusivity and serenity. We always say that the best rewards require a bit of effort, and Vananda is living proof of that.

The most common and, for many, the most comfortable way to access Vananda is by sea. From the port of Diafani, which is the closest and most accessible village in northern Karpathos, small boats or 'kaikis' usually depart, offering daily excursions to Vananda and other nearby coves. These boat trips are, in themselves, a wonderful experience, as they allow you to enjoy the stunning views of Karpathos's pristine coastline, with its steep cliffs and crystal-clear waters. It is an excellent option if we prefer to avoid the less-traveled roads and enjoy a relaxed day at sea.

For the more adventurous, there is the option of arriving by land, although we must warn that the path is not for everyone. From Diafani, there is a dirt road, often in somewhat precarious condition, that winds through a rural landscape to a point near the beach. This route requires a 4x4 vehicle or, at least, a car with good ground clearance and an experienced driver. Once you reach the end of the drivable road, there is usually a short but steep walk down to the shore. We recommend asking the locals in Diafani about the current state of the road before venturing out, as conditions can vary. The reward, however, of reaching this hidden beach on our own is a sense of achievement and an even deeper connection with the natural surroundings.

It is also possible to reach Diafani, the main starting point, from Pigadia (the capital of Karpathos) by a bus that operates on a limited schedule, or by renting a car. From Diafani, the journey to Vananda becomes more local. Regardless of the method we choose, the trip to Vananda prepares us for the experience of a wild and virgin beach, far from the usual tourist bustle of other beaches in Greece.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Vananda greets us with a shoreline composition that is as characteristic as it is charming: a predominant mix of polished pebbles and some areas of coarser sand. Do not expect the typical fine, golden sand found on other beaches of Karpathos or in Greece. Here, the pebbles, in shades of white, grey, and ochre, have been shaped by the sea over the centuries, creating a unique texture under our feet. We always advise wearing appropriate water footwear, such as water shoes, as it will greatly facilitate entering and exiting the sea and make walking along the shore much more comfortable. This pebble feature is what gives Vananda much of its rustic and natural charm.

But if the shore is particular, the real spectacle begins when we venture into its waters. The waters of Vananda are, without exaggeration, spectacular. Of astonishing crystal-clear transparency, they allow us to see the seabed with exceptional clarity, even at several meters depth. The color varies from a bright emerald green in the shallower areas to a deep turquoise blue in the open sea, creating a visual gradient that is a true delight for the eyes. This purity of the water is one of the reasons why Vananda is so cherished by us and by all who visit.

The water temperature at Playa de Vananda is, in general, very pleasant during the summer months, warm and refreshing at the same time. As it is not a fine-sand beach, the water tends to be cooler and cleaner, as less sediment is stirred up. The entry into the sea is gentle in some areas, but in others it can deepen quickly, making it ideal for swimming and exploring. We have spent hours submerged in these waters, enjoying the feeling of weightlessness and the underwater beauty it offers. It is, without a doubt, one of the strong points that make Vananda one of the most memorable beaches of Karpathos.
