How to Get to Playa de Lefkos

Getting to Playa de Lefkos is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it is quite straightforward. First, we must fly to Karpathos National Airport (AOK), which receives direct flights from Athens and other European cities during the high season. Once at the airport, we have several options to reach our destination in Lefkos, which is located about 35-40 kilometers to the northwest.

• Car rental: This is, without a doubt, the most recommended option. Renting a car gives us the freedom to explore not only Lefkos but also the rest of the island at our own pace. The journey from the airport to Lefkos is picturesque, with well-maintained roads winding through mountainous and coastal landscapes. The trip takes approximately 45-60 minutes.
• Taxi: Taxis are available at the airport. It is a comfortable option, though more expensive. It is advisable to agree on the price with the driver before starting the journey.
• Bus: During the summer season, there is a bus service connecting the airport with Pigadia (the capital of Karpathos) and from there, another bus or taxi can take us to Lefkos. However, frequencies can be limited and schedules are not always the most convenient, so we recommend checking in advance if we choose this option.

The Sand and the Water

What captivates us most about Playa de Lefkos is, without a doubt, the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters. The sand here is predominantly fine and of a soft golden hue, incredibly pleasant underfoot. It is perfect for building sandcastles, for taking long barefoot walks along the shore, or simply for relaxing while lying down and feeling its warmth. This characteristic makes it an ideal place for families with young children, as the absence of stones and the softness of the ground facilitate play and movement.

The waters of the Aegean Sea in Lefkos are a marvel. They are of an intense turquoise color, crystal clear to the point of being able to see the seabed with total clarity, even at several meters depth. Their calmness is remarkable, especially in the more sheltered coves, making them perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and for the little ones to enjoy a safe swim. Across its different coves and in the adjacent small village, we find good infrastructure that meets the needs of visitors. We believe the range of services is just right, without being excessive, which helps preserve the tranquil spirit of the place.

Among the services and facilities we can enjoy, we highlight:

• Sunbeds and umbrellas: Many of the organized coves offer sunbed and umbrella rentals, perfect for protecting ourselves from the sun and resting comfortably. Prices are usually reasonable.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Right on the beach or a few meters away, there are several chiringuitos and traditional tavernas. Here we can enjoy refreshing drinks, light snacks, and, of course, delicious dishes from Greek and local cuisine. It is ideal for eating without having to go too far from the sand.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: In several of the busier areas, we find shower facilities to wash off the salt and sand after swimming, as well as clean and well-maintained public toilets.
• Parking: There are free or low-cost parking areas near the main coves, which is very convenient if we have opted to rent a car.
• Lifeguard service: During the high season, some of the more popular coves have lifeguard service, adding an extra layer of safety, especially for families.
• Mini-markets: In the small village of Lefkos, a short distance from the beaches, there are mini-markets where we can purchase supplies, drinks, snacks, and other essential items.

Best Time to Visit
