How to Get to Playa de Sounio

Getting to Playa de Sounio is part of the adventure and, truth be told, one of the most picturesque routes we can take around Athens. The most common and recommended way is by car, which allows us to fully enjoy the famous Athenian Riviera.

By Car

From the center of Athens, the journey takes approximately an hour and a half, depending on traffic. We will take the coastal road that runs along the eastern coast of Attica, offering us spectacular views of the Aegean Sea. This route, known as the Sounio Road, is a delight for the senses, with hidden coves, small fishing villages, and the salty scent of the sea accompanying us the whole way. There is ample parking available at the top, near the Temple of Poseidon, and from there we can descend to the beach on foot. It is important to remember that access to the beach is relatively easy, but the parking lot can fill up during high season.

By Bus

For those who prefer not to drive, there is the option of taking a public bus (KTEL) from the Pedion Areos bus station in Athens. Buses to Sounio are regular and offer an economical and comfortable way to get there. The bus ride also provides panoramic views and drops us off near the archaeological site, from where the beach is accessible on foot. We recommend checking the schedules in advance, especially outside the high season, as they may vary.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de Sounio, we must be honest: we are not facing a vast expanse of fine sand like those we might find in other parts of the world. Here, the charm lies in its uniqueness. The ground is a mixture of sand and small pebbles, which gives it a more natural and rustic character. This combination makes the water extraordinarily clear, as sediments do not rise as easily as on pure sand beaches.

The waters of the Aegean at Sounio are simply spectacular. Their transparency is such that we can easily see the seabed, inviting us to explore underwater life with simple snorkeling gear. The color ranges from a vibrant turquoise blue near the shore to a deep blue as we go further out. The waters are calm, protected by the small cove, making them ideal for swimming and enjoyment for the whole family. The feeling of swimming with the Temple of Poseidon, the ancient guardian of the place, watching over us from above, is an experience few beaches can offer.

Services and Facilities

Playa de Sounio is not a massively organized beach, and that is part of its charm. We will not find large tourist complexes or excessive infrastructure, which helps maintain its serene and natural atmosphere. However, it does have the basic services we need to enjoy a comfortable and pleasant day at the beach.

Chiringuitos and Dining

Right on the beach or in its vicinity, it is common to find a chiringuito or a small traditional Greek taverna. These establishments offer us the opportunity to enjoy a refreshing drink, a Greek coffee, or even a light meal with sea views. It is the perfect place to try the local cuisine, especially fresh fish, while we relax. The offering may not be very extensive, but the quality and authenticity usually more than make up for it.

Parking and Access

As mentioned earlier, there is parking available at the top, near the Temple of Poseidon. From there, a path leads us comfortably down to the beach. This facilitates access for those traveling by car. The proximity to the archaeological site means that parking facilities are relatively well managed.

Umbrellas and Sunbeds

Although it is not a massively organized beach, some of the nearby establishments or the chiringuitos themselves usually offer umbrellas and sunbeds for rent. This is very convenient, especially during the summer months, when the Greek sun can be very intense. It allows us to rest in the shade and enjoy the sea in total comfort. If we prefer more privacy or do not wish to rent, we can always bring our own umbrella and towels to spread out on the pebble and sand area.
