How to Get to Playa de Charakas

Getting to Playa de Charakas is relatively straightforward, although the most comfortable and flexible option is always by car. We always recommend renting one if you plan to explore the Attica region at your own pace. From central Athens, the journey takes approximately one hour and twenty minutes, depending on traffic. We must take the coastal road heading south, passing through towns like Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, and Lagonisi, until we reach the Sounion area. The route is scenic and offers impressive views of the Aegean Sea, making the journey part of the adventure. There are clear signs that will guide us to the beach, located not far from the famous Temple of Poseidon.

For those who prefer public transport, there is also an option, albeit with less flexibility. KTEL Attica buses depart regularly from the Pedion Areos bus station in Athens bound for Sounion. Once in Sounion, Playa de Charakas is a short distance away, but we may need to take a local taxi or walk about 20-30 minutes, depending on the exact bus stop. While the bus is an economical alternative, the car gives us the freedom to stop at viewpoints, explore nearby coastal villages, or simply enjoy the road at a leisurely pace. Parking at the beach is usually ample, making our arrival even easier.

The Sand and Water

One of the most attractive features of Playa de Charakas is undoubtedly the combination of its sand and waters. The beach is composed of a pleasant mix of fine sand and small pebbles, giving it a distinctive and natural touch. • Sunbeds and umbrellas: There is a good number of umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds available for rent, allowing us to relax in the shade and enjoy the Greek sun without having to carry our own equipment. It's ideal for spending hours reading a book or simply contemplating the sea.
• Chiringuitos and restaurants: On the beach, or very close to it, we will find chiringuitos and small tavernas where we can enjoy refreshing drinks, light snacks, or even a full meal. From an iced Greek coffee to a delicious souvlaki, there are options for all tastes. We love being able to have a snack or a cold beer without having to stray too far from the shore.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: After a refreshing swim in the sea, it's always nice to be able to rinse off the salt. The beach has public showers, as well as clean and well-maintained toilet facilities, an essential service that is often underestimated.
