How to Get to Playa de Steno

Getting to Playa de Steno is part of the adventure and, at the same time, a simple experience that brings us closer to the essence of Astipalea. Located in the central part of the island, access is relatively easy, making it an attractive option for all visitors. We always recommend renting a vehicle, either a car or a scooter, to explore Astipalea at our own pace, and for Steno, this is the best option.

Road Access

From Chora, the island's picturesque capital, the journey to Steno takes approximately 10-15 minutes by car. The road is well-signposted and in good condition, making the trip easy. Driving around Astipalea is a pleasure in itself, with arid landscapes dotted with the intense blue of the Aegean at every turn. There's a small detour that leads directly to Playa de Steno, and once there, you'll find an improvised space to park your vehicle, usually under the shade of a tree or next to the access road. Don't expect an organized, paved parking lot, but rather a more rustic and natural parking area, which fits perfectly with the beach's atmosphere.

Public Transport and Alternatives

Although the island has a bus service connecting Chora with some of the more popular Astipalea beaches, like Livadi or Pera Gialos, Playa de Steno usually doesn't have a direct bus stop. However, you could take a bus to a nearby point and then walk, although this might be a bit uncomfortable under the summer sun. For those who prefer not to drive, local taxis or private transport services are an excellent, though more expensive, alternative. We always prefer the freedom that a rental car gives us to stop at any viewpoint or hidden cove we discover along the way.

Although there may be small stones or pebbles mixed in at some points along the shore, most of the beach is pure sand, offering a comfortable and clean surface for all visitors.

The waters of Playa de Steno are simply spectacular. Their transparency is astonishing, allowing us to see the seabed with exceptional clarity. With hues ranging from bright turquoise near the shore to a deeper blue as we go further out, the sea here is a constant invitation to dive in. We find calm water, generally without big waves, making it ideal for swimming and relaxing. The temperature is very pleasant during the summer months, refreshing but not cold, perfect for combating the Greek heat.

The cleanliness of the water is impeccable, and this is something we highly value in Greek beaches. It's no wonder many describe the sea at Steno as a natural swimming pool. The calmness of its waters also makes it an excellent place for snorkeling, even if you're not an experienced diver. With a mask and snorkel, you can explore the marine life near the rocks at the ends of the cove, discovering small fish and underwater formations that enrich the experience.
