How to Get to Playa de Aponissos

Getting to Playa de Aponissos is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it is quite straightforward, making it an accessible destination for most travelers. Our route always begins in Athens, the natural starting point for exploring the Greek islands.

From Athens to Angistri

The first step is to take a ferry from the port of Piraeus, in Athens, to Angistri. There are two main types of vessels:

• Slow ferry (Agia Marina): Takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes and docks at the port of Skala or Megalochori (Milos). It is more economical and allows you to bring a car.
• Flying Dolphin (hydrofoil): Much faster, takes about 50 minutes, and also arrives at Skala or Megalochori. It is ideal if time is limited, but does not allow vehicles.

From Angistri to Aponissos

Once on Angistri, whether in Skala or Megalochori, we have several options to get to Playa de Aponissos, which is located at the southwestern tip of the island:

• Local bus: During the summer months, there is a regular bus service connecting the main villages of the island with Aponissos. It is a comfortable and economical option, and the schedules are usually well signposted at the stops.
• Taxi: Taxis are available in Skala and Megalochori. It is a faster and more direct option, ideal if you are traveling in a group or with a lot of luggage. The journey is relatively short and picturesque.
• Vehicle rental: For those who prefer the freedom to explore at their own pace, Angistri offers scooter, quad, and bicycle rentals. Driving to Aponissos is a pleasant experience, passing through rural landscapes and small settlements. There is parking available near the beach, managed by the local taverna.
• Walking or cycling: For the more adventurous and fit, it is possible to reach Aponissos on foot or by bicycle, enjoying the landscape and tranquility of the path. From Megalochori, the walk is approximately 4-5 kilometers, while from Skala it is a bit longer. We always advise carrying water and sun protection if you choose this option.

The Sand and the Water

When we talk about Playa de Aponissos, it is essential to describe its most distinctive features: its ground and its waters. We have visited countless beaches, and Aponissos has a personality of its own that clearly sets it apart.

Type of Ground

The first thing we notice when stepping onto Aponissos is that it is not a fine sand beach. Its ground is predominantly pebbles and small stones, which gives it a very natural and rugged appearance. These pebbles, polished by the constant ebb and flow of the waves, are of different sizes and shades, creating a mosaic under our feet. While it may not be the most comfortable texture for those looking to sink their toes into soft sand, we find that it adds a rustic and authentic charm to the cove. It is advisable to wear suitable footwear, such as water shoes or river sandals, especially for entering and exiting the water, as the stones can be a bit slippery or sharp.

Among the pebbles, in some areas, you can find a mix of coarse sand that intermingles with the stones, creating a mixed sand type in certain spots. However, the predominance of pebbles defines its character. This ground composition is also the reason for the incredible clarity of its waters, as there is no fine sand to stir up and cloud the sea.
