If there is one corner of the Cyclades that has stolen our hearts with its authentic beauty and serene atmosphere, it is Amorgos. And within this wonderful island, Playa de Aegiali stands out as one of its most precious gems. Located in a wide, protected bay, this Amorgos beach offers us a perfect combination of comfort and pristine nature, ideal for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle and immerse themselves in the essence of the Aegean.
Upon arriving at Aegiali, the first impression is that of a canvas painted in shades of blue and gold. The sand, of a soft color and fine texture, stretches along the coast, inviting us to walk barefoot while the sea breeze caresses us. The waters, of a hypnotic turquoise blue, are so transparent that we can see the bottom with total clarity. It is a Playa de Aegiali that invites us to disconnect, to enjoy every ray of sunshine, and to let time pass unhurriedly, at the slow pace of island life.
We consider it an ideal destination for all types of travelers, from families with young children to couples seeking romance or friends wanting to combine tranquility with a touch of social life. Its infrastructure, without being excessive, ensures we have everything we need for a perfect beach day at hand, without losing that natural charm we so value in Greece beaches.
How to Get to Playa de Aegiali
Getting to Playa de Aegiali is part of the adventure of discovering Amorgos. The island does not have an airport, which helps preserve its authentic and less crowded character. The main access is by ferry.
From Athens and Other Islands
The most common route to reach Amorgos is to take a ferry from the port of Piraeus in Athens. The journeys can last between 7 and 9 hours, depending on the type of ship (conventional or high-speed) and the intermediate stops. Another option is to fly to a nearby island with an airport, such as Naxos or Paros, and from there take a ferry to Amorgos. Schedules and availability vary by season, so we always recommend booking in advance, especially if we travel during the high season (July and August).
Once in Amorgos, the ferry will drop us off at one of its two main ports: Katapola or Aegiali. If our ferry arrives directly at the port of Aegiali, Playa de Aegiali will be just a few steps away, which is incredibly convenient. If we arrive at Katapola, which is the island's other main port, we will have several options to get to Aegiali:
- Local bus: During the tourist season, there are buses connecting Katapola with Aegiali. Schedules are usually coordinated with ferry arrivals and departures. It is an economical option and allows us to enjoy the island's landscape.
- Taxi: We can find taxis at the port of Katapola. It is a faster and more comfortable option, especially if we have a lot of luggage or are traveling in a group.
- Car or motorbike rental: For those who prefer the freedom to explore the island at their own pace, renting a car or motorbike is an excellent alternative. Rental agencies are usually available at both ports. The road connecting Katapola with Aegiali is picturesque and offers spectacular views.
The Sand and Water
Playa de Aegiali is a true delight for the senses, and its natural features are, without a doubt, its greatest attraction. Stepping onto the sand, we immediately notice its softness. It is fine, golden sand that feels pleasant underfoot and invites us to lie down and relax. Unlike other Amorgos beaches that may have pebbles or rocks, Aegiali is predominantly sandy, making it very comfortable for walking and for children to play.
The type of seabed in the swimming area is also mainly sand, with a gentle and gradual entry into the sea. This is a great advantage, as we can walk several meters into the sea before the water fully covers us, making it a very safe place for swimmers of all ages. There are no abrupt rocks or sudden changes in depth, which gives us great peace of mind.
But if there is one thing that truly captivates us about Playa de Aegiali, it is its waters. They are of astonishing clarity, with shades ranging from bright turquoise at the shore to a deep blue further out. The transparency is such that we can observe small fish swimming around us without the need for goggles. Furthermore, being in a protected bay, the waters are usually very calm, with little to no waves, which is ideal for swimming placidly, paddleboarding, or simply floating and letting oneself be carried by the calm.
The water temperature in the summer months is very pleasant, refreshing but not cold, perfect for combating the Greek sun's heat. The cleanliness of the environment is evident, and it is no wonder that this Greece beach has been awarded the prestigious Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies the excellent quality of its waters and services. For us, the combination of fine sand and crystal-clear, calm waters is what makes Aegiali a Mediterranean paradise.
Services and Facilities
One of the reasons why Playa de Aegiali is so popular and comfortable is the variety and quality of the services and facilities it offers. Despite its relaxed atmosphere, we lack nothing to enjoy a complete beach day.
- Sunbeds and umbrellas: Along the beach, we find several areas equipped with umbrellas and comfortable sunbeds that we can rent for the day. This allows us to rela
