How to get to Playa del Cabezo

Getting to Playa del Cabezo is relatively easy, especially if you are in southern Tenerife. We recommend renting a car for total freedom of movement, although there are also public transport options that will get you quite close. The beach is very close to the town of El Médano, a key reference point in the area.

By car

If you're coming from the north or south of the island, the most direct route is via the TF-1 motorway. You should take exit 59 towards 'San Isidro / El Médano'. Once you've taken this exit, follow the signs to El Médano. Before reaching the town center, you'll see turnoffs leading to the beach areas. Playa del Cabezo is located east of El Médano, following the coast towards Montaña Roja. There is clear signage towards the windsurfing and kitesurfing spots. You'll find several free parking areas nearby, although in high season or during sporting events, it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot, so we advise arriving early. The advantage of going by car is that you can comfortably carry all your equipment and explore the surroundings easily.

By public transport

From Santa Cruz de Tenerife or from major tourist areas like Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas, you can take a TITSA bus (guagua) to El Médano. Lines 470 and 483 are some of those connecting these areas with El Médano. Once at the El Médano bus station, Playa del Cabezo is a 15-20 minute walk away, following the coast to the east. It's a pleasant walk that will allow you to soak up the surfer atmosphere and enjoy the views. If you're carrying heavy equipment, this option might be less comfortable, but for a day visit without gear, it's perfectly viable.

The sand and the water

When we step onto Playa del Cabezo, the first thing that surprises us is its uniqueness. Here you won't find the typical golden sands you might expect from other Tenerife beaches. Instead, we are greeted by sand of volcanic origin, of a dark color ranging from gray to black, often mixed with small pebbles and stones that the Atlantic has polished over time. This characteristic gives it a more natural and wild appearance, very much in keeping with the spirit of the beach. The texture of the sand is therefore a mixture, making it interesting to the touch and sight, and it's a constant reminder of the island's powerful geology.

The water at Playa del Cabezo is of excellent quality, crystal clear and refreshing. The shades of the sea vary from intense blue to turquoise in the shallower areas, creating a fascinating contrast with the dark sand. However, it's important to note that this is not a beach with calm, tranquil waters, especially in the more exposed area. Playa del Cabezo is famous for its waves and, above all, for the constant wind that hits it. This makes it the perfect setting for water sports, but perhaps not the ideal place for a relaxing swim if you're not used to currents or waves. The waves can be considerable, providing the perfect challenge for surfers and an exciting experience for those who dare to dive in.

The water temperature is pleasant for most of the year, around 19-23°C, allowing for a swim in any season. However, the presence of rocks in some areas, especially at the ends of the beach or on the shore, requires us to be cautious when entering and exiting the sea. We recommend wearing water shoes if you plan to spend a lot of time in the water or if your feet are sensitive. In summary, Playa del Cabezo offers us a different beach experience, more connected to the untamed nature of Tenerife, where beauty lies in its authenticity and the energy emanating from its surroundings.
