From our perspective as enthusiasts of the Spanish coastline, Playa de las Caletillas is undoubtedly one of those Tenerife gems that may not always grab the headlines but possesses genuine charm and admirable functionality. Located in the picturesque municipality of Candelaria on the vibrant island of Tenerife, this beach is much more than just a stretch of coast; it's a place where local life merges with the tranquility sought by travelers.

We see it as a fantastic option for those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of the more crowded southern beaches, without giving up comfort and quality services. Its peculiar dark volcanic sand, mixed with small pebbles, gives it a unique personality, very characteristic of the Canary Islands. It's a space where time seems to slow down, inviting us to enjoy every ray of sun and every sea breeze with enviable calm. Playa de las Caletillas stretches across several coves, connected by a pleasant promenade, allowing us to choose our favorite spot for the day. How to Get to Playa de las Caletillas

Getting to Playa de las Caletillas is relatively easy, given its strategic location in Candelaria, a well-connected municipality on the east coast of Tenerife. We always recommend planning the journey to make the most of the day.

By Car

For many, the car is the most comfortable and versatile option. If we're coming from Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the journey is short, about 15-20 minutes, taking the TF-1 motorway heading south. Las Caletillas is located just before reaching the urban center of Candelaria. From the south of the island, for example, from Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas, the trip is about 40-50 minutes, also via the TF-1 heading north. The beach is well signposted and has nearby parking areas, although during high season or on weekends, it can be a bit more difficult to find a spot right next to it. However, there are always options in the surrounding area, within a short walking distance.

By Bus (Guagua)

Tenerife's intercity bus network, known as TITSA, offers excellent connections. From Santa Cruz, we can take several lines that pass through Candelaria and Las Caletillas, such as the 111 or 122. The service is frequent and the stops are usually very close to the beach and the promenade. If we're coming from the south, there are also lines that get us close, although we might need to make a transfer at the Santa Cruz station or at some intermediate point. It's an economical and sustainable option that we highly value.

By Taxi

For those seeking greater comfort or traveling in a group, a taxi is an excellent alternative. We can take one from any point on the island, and it will drop us off directly at the entrance to the beach or at our accommodation in Las Caletillas. It's a more expensive option, but very convenient, especially if we have a lot of luggage or want to avoid parking worries.

The Sand and Water

Playa de las Caletillas offers us a very particular bathing experience, marked by the geological characteristics of Tenerife. Here, the sand is not the typical golden or white sand we might find in other latitudes, but a fascinating mix of dark volcanic sand and small pebbles. This combination gives it a very authentic look and a peculiar texture under our feet. We personally find this uniqueness very attractive, as it connects us directly with the island's volcanic origin. It's advisable to wear water shoes if we're sensitive to stones, although in many areas the sand is fine enough to walk barefoot without a problem.

As for the water, it's one of the strong points of this beach. Playa de las Caletillas is protected by dikes and breakwaters, which ensures that its waters are, for the most part, calm and serene. This makes it an ideal place for swimming and relaxing without worrying about strong currents or big waves. The water clarity is remarkable, allowing us to easily see the seabed, which invites us to practice a bit of snorkeling and discover the local marine fauna. The water temperature in Tenerife is pleasant all year round, meaning we can enjoy a refreshing swim in any season. The combination of dark sand and clear waters under the Canarian sun creates a visually beautiful contrast worthy of a postcard.

Services and Facilities

One of the aspects we most value about Playa de las Caletillas is the complete range of services and facilities it makes available to us. As an urban beach, it's designed for visitor comfort, and we can vouch for that. Everything is designed to make our beach day as pleasant and carefree as possible.

Among the essential services, we find showers to wash off the salt and sand after swimming, something that is always appreciated. It also has public toilets/WCs, well-maintained, which is essential for spending a whole day at the beach without worries. For those of us arriving by car, the availability of nearby parking zones is a big plus, although, as mentioned, during peak times it may require a bit of patience.

Safety is a priority, and Playa de las Caletillas has a lifeguard service during the bathing season, which gives us extra peace of mind, especially if traveling with children.
