How to Get to Playa de las Américas

Getting to Playa de las Américas is extremely easy, given its popularity and excellent connectivity. The main gateway to the island of Tenerife is Tenerife South Airport, also known as Reina Sofía (TFS), which is located just 15-20 kilometers away. Once there, we have several options to reach our beach destination:

From Tenerife South Airport (TFS)

• Rental Car: This is, without a doubt, the option we most recommend for those who wish to explore the island at their own pace. There are numerous car rental companies at the airport and the journey to Playa de las Américas is direct and well-signposted via the TF-1 motorway.
• Taxi: A quick and comfortable option, ideal if we are traveling with a lot of luggage or prefer immediacy. We find taxi ranks right outside the arrivals terminal.
• Bus (Guaguas): The public transport company TITSA offers regular connections from the airport to Playa de las Américas. Lines 40 and 111 are the most common, with strategic stops in the area. It's an economical and efficient alternative.
• Private Transfers: Many companies offer pre-booked transfer services, which can be an excellent option for groups or for those seeking a worry-free door-to-door service.

From Other Points on the Island

If we are already in Tenerife, the TF-1 is the main road that connects us to the south. The TITSA bus network is also very comprehensive, with routes reaching Playa de las Américas from the capital, Santa Cruz, or from other tourist towns like Puerto de la Cruz.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive aspects of the beaches in southern Tenerife, and of Playa de las Américas in particular, is its unique volcanic sand. Here, the sand is dark in color, a grayish tone that contrasts beautifully with the turquoise blue of the ocean. We describe it as fine and soft to the touch, making it very pleasant for walking barefoot and laying out a towel. It's important to note that, being volcanic, it can get quite hot under the intense sun, so flip-flops are always a good idea.

The waters at Playa de las Américas are, in general, calm and crystal clear, ideal for swimming. This is largely due to the presence of breakwaters and jetties that protect the coast from the stronger Atlantic currents, creating a sort of bay or cove with serene waters. This characteristic makes them very safe beaches suitable for all ages, especially for young children. The water temperature is mild year-round, allowing us to enjoy a refreshing dip in any season.

• Sun Loungers and Umbrellas: For those seeking maximum comfort, there are rental points for sun loungers and umbrellas, allowing us to relax without having to carry our own equipment.
• Beach Bars (Chiringuitos) and Restaurants: The beachfront is dotted with beach bars where we can have a refreshing drink or a snack, and a wide variety of restaurants offering everything from local cuisine to international dishes.
• Lifeguard Services: Safety is paramount, and therefore, the beach has lifeguard and surveillance services during bathing hours, ensuring peace of mind for swimmers.
• Full Accessibility: A point we greatly value is accessibility. Many of the beaches in Playa de las Américas have ramps, wooden walkways, and sometimes even amphibious chairs to facilitate access to the sea for people with reduced mobility. It's an example of inclusive tourism.
• Parking: Although parking right on the front line can be difficult in high season, there are public parking areas and paid parking lots in the surrounding area, a short walk from the beach.
