How to Get to Playa de la Martinenca

Getting to Playa de la Martinenca is relatively easy, and the journey itself prepares us for the tranquility that awaits. If we come from the north or south, the main access routes are the AP-7 motorway or the national road N-340. From the AP-7, the most convenient exit is number 41 (Amposta/Sant Carles de la Ràpita), which directs us towards the N-340. Once on the N-340, we must take the turnoff towards Alcanar and follow the signs that will lead us directly to the beach area.

For those traveling from the municipality of Alcanar itself or from nearby towns like Sant Carles de la Ràpita or Les Cases d'Alcanar, access is even more direct via local coastal roads. The beach is well signposted, which greatly facilitates arrival. You won't have any problem finding it, as it is one of the main points of interest on the Alcanar coast.

Transport Options

• By private car: This is, by far, the most comfortable and recommended option. It gives us total freedom of movement to explore not only the beach but also the surroundings and the Ebro Delta. Furthermore, Playa de la Martinenca has an enabled Parking area, which is a big plus, especially in the summer months. Although it can fill up at peak times, we always find a spot with a little patience.
• Public transport: While there are bus lines connecting Alcanar with other towns in the area, direct access to Playa de la Martinenca by public transport can be more limited. It is most likely that we will have to get off in the town of Alcanar and, from there, walk or take a taxi to the beach, which is feasible but less practical if we have a lot of luggage or are with small children.
• Bicycle: For cycling enthusiasts, the area offers very pleasant routes along the coast. Arriving by bicycle at the Alcanar beach is a fantastic experience, allowing us to enjoy the landscape and the outdoors before a refreshing swim.

The Sand and Water

One of the aspects that most captivates us about Playa de la Martinenca is, certainly, the particularity of its sand and the quality of its waters. Here we will not find the typical fine, golden sand that characterizes other Tarragona beaches, but a very interesting mix that gives it a unique character. Its composition is mixed sand, with pebbles and gravel predominating in the part closest to the promenade or access, which transforms into finer sand as we approach the shore and the seabed.

This combination of mixed soil type (sand and pebble) has its advantages. On one hand, the presence of gravel and pebbles helps keep the water exceptionally clear and clean, as not as much sand is stirred up by the movement of the waves or bathers. This is something we greatly appreciate because it allows us to enjoy excellent visibility for snorkeling and for seeing the seabed clearly. Furthermore, the finer sand at the shore and in the water is very pleasant for the feet once we enter the sea.

The waters of Playa de la Martinenca are famous for their tranquility and shallow depth, especially in the first few meters. This makes it an idyllic place for families with young children, who can splash and play in complete safety. The absence of strong currents and generally gentle waves contribute to creating a natural pool-like atmosphere, perfect for relaxing and enjoying without worries. The water temperature, warm during the summer months, is a true delight that invites us to prolong our swim.

Furthermore, the quality of its waters is usually excellent, as reflected in the presence of the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies not only the cleanliness of the water but also the environmental management and safety of the beach. This gives us extra peace of mind when choosing Playa de la Martinenca as our bathing destination.
