Far from the bustle of mass tourist destinations, here we found a haven of peace where time seems to slow down. How to Get to Playa de Komi

Getting to Playa de Komi is part of the adventure and charm of exploring the island of Chios. Located on the southeastern coast of the island, it is not far from some of the most picturesque villages famous for the cultivation of mastic, the mastic resin.

From Chios Town and the Airport

The most common starting point for most visitors is the island's capital, Chios Town, or the National Airport of Chios 'Omiros' (JKH), which is a short distance from the city. From both points, Playa de Komi is approximately 20-25 kilometers away, which translates to a journey of about 30-40 minutes by car, depending on traffic and road conditions.

• Rental car: For us, the most comfortable and flexible way to explore Chios and get to Playa de Komi is by renting a car. There are several car rental companies both at the airport and in Chios Town. This allows us to move at our own pace, discover hidden coves, and visit inland villages without depending on public transport schedules. The road to Komi is well signposted and in good condition, offering panoramic views as we approach the coast.
• Taxi: Another option is to take a taxi from Chios Town or the airport. It is a faster alternative if we don't want to drive, although logically more expensive than the bus or a rental car. Taxis are readily available at the main points on the island.
• Local bus (KTEL): Chios has a public bus service (KTEL) that connects the capital with the main villages and beaches of the island. It is an economical option, although schedules can be less frequent, especially outside the high season. We would have to check the specific schedules from Chios Town to southern villages, such as Pyrgi or Mesta, and verify if there is a convenient stop near Komi or if a short walk or a taxi from the nearest village is necessary. To get to Playa de Komi, the bus will most likely drop us off in a nearby village, and from there we would have to walk or take a local taxi. We always recommend confirming schedules in advance, as they can vary.

Parking at Playa de Komi

Once we arrive at Playa de Komi, parking is usually not a major problem. There are designated parking areas near the tavernas and chiringuitos, often for free. In the summer months, especially in August, we might have to search a bit more or park a little further away and walk to the sand, but the crowds are not as massive as at other beaches in Greece, which makes it easier to find a spot. We always appreciate the convenience of having the car nearby to load and unload our beach belongings.

The Sand and the Water

When stepping onto Playa de Komi, we encounter a distinctive feature that sets it apart from many other Chios beaches: its particular composition of sand and pebbles. It is not a typical fine golden sand beach, but a surface that alternates small stones polished by the sea with areas of coarser sand. To us, this mix seems very attractive, as it gives it a natural and wild appearance while providing an interesting texture underfoot. The entrance to the water also presents this combination, with some pebbles on the shore that gradually give way to a sandier bottom as we go further in.

The Color and Transparency of the Water

But if there is something that truly made us fall in love with Playa de Komi, it is its waters. They are simply spectacular! Of a vibrant turquoise blue that fades to a deeper blue as we move away from the shore, the transparency is astonishing. We can see the seabed with exceptional clarity, making it an ideal spot for snorkeling, even for beginners. The visibility is excellent, allowing us to observe small fish and marine life without needing to dive too deep. This quality is something we always look for in beaches in Greece, and Komi more than meets our expectations.
