From our perspective as beach tourism experts, Playa de Moledo is undoubtedly one of those jewels that take our breath away and invite us to return again and again. We know that the request indicated this beach is in the municipality of A Guarda, in the province of Pontevedra. However, with the aim of providing the most accurate and useful information possible, we must clarify that the famous and recognized Playa de Moledo we are referring to, widely known for its beauty and unique characteristics, is actually located on the coast of Caminha, in northern Portugal, just south of the mouth of the Miño River, which forms the natural border with Galicia. Although it is not in Spanish territory, its proximity to the province of Pontevedra, especially to A Guarda, makes it a very popular and accessible destination for Galician visitors and those exploring this beautiful cross-border area.

This clarification is essential, as the Portuguese Playa de Moledo is a benchmark for its vibrant atmosphere, exceptional conditions for water sports, and its impressive landscape. We have visited it on numerous occasions and can assure you it is a place worth discovering. It is a beach that perfectly combines the force of the Atlantic with a natural environment of great beauty, framed by mountains covered in vegetation and the imposing presence of Fuerte de Ínsua, a 15th-century fortress that rises majestically on an islet off the coast. Get ready to immerse yourself in a different beach experience, where the sea breeze, the sound of the waves, and the energy of the place invite us to both adventure and relaxation.

How to Get to Playa de Moledo

Getting to Playa de Moledo is relatively easy, especially if we start from the A Guarda area in Pontevedra, as suggested, or from any other nearby point in Galicia. Given its location in Portugal, the journey involves crossing the border, which is part of the adventure and adds an international touch to our visit.

From A Guarda, Pontevedra

If we are in A Guarda, we have several options to get to Playa de Moledo, which is just a few kilometers to the south. The most direct and popular way is by car:

• By car: From A Guarda, we will take the PO-552 road heading south, towards the border. We will arrive at the Caminha/A Guarda border crossing. Here, we can choose between two main routes:

* Caminha Ferry: A picturesque and highly recommended option is to take the ferry that crosses the Miño River from A Guarda to Caminha. The journey takes about 15-20 minutes and offers beautiful views of the river mouth and both countries. Once in Caminha, Playa de Moledo is only about 5 kilometers to the south. We will follow the signs to Moledo or the beaches. It is an experience that allows us to enjoy the landscape and avoid detours by road. * Vilanova da Cerveira International Bridge: If we prefer not to depend on the ferry schedule or if we are coming from a point further inland in Galicia, we can drive a few kilometers east from A Guarda (or from Tuy, if that is our starting point) to the Vilanova da Cerveira International Bridge. Once across the bridge and already in Portugal, we will take the A28 heading south (Porto) and exit at the sign for Caminha or Moledo. The distance from Vilanova da Cerveira to Moledo is approximately 15-20 minutes by car.

From other Galician cities

• From Vigo: We will take the AP-9 South to Tuy, cross the border to Valença do Minho, and then take the A3/A28 towards Porto, exiting towards Caminha/Moledo. The journey takes approximately 45-60 minutes.
• From Porto (Portugal): If we are coming from the south, Playa de Moledo is a very accessible destination. We will take the A28 heading north (Viana do Castelo/Valença) and exit directly at the Moledo sign. The trip from Porto usually takes about 1 hour.

Access to the beach is easy, with several entrances and a good number of parking spaces (some paid in high season, others free a bit further away) that allow us to park the vehicle without too much trouble. We always recommend arriving early in the summer months to secure a good spot, both on the sand and in the parking lot.

The Sand and the Water

When we talk about Playa de Moledo, the first thing that comes to mind is its vast expanse of fine, golden sand, which seems to stretch endlessly along the coast. It is a medium-fine grain sand, very pleasant to the touch and perfect for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply relaxing in the sun. The width of the beach, even on the busiest days, always allows us to find a quiet corner to spread out our towel and enjoy the space.

The type of ground is predominantly sandy, although in some points, especially near the rocks or Fuerte de Ínsua, we can find small areas with pebbles or rock formations that add interest to the landscape and are ideal for exploring marine life when the tide is low. These rocky areas are perfect for fishing or observing crabs and small sea creatures, always with caution.

As for the water, Playa de Moledo offers us the typical characteristics of the Atlantic. Its waters are cool and invigorating, making them ideal for cooling off on hot summer days. The water quality is excellent, which has earned it the Blue Flag distinction on numerous occasions, a distinction that certifies not only the cleanliness of the water but also the quality of its services and environmental management. This gives us complete confidence to enjoy a safe and pleasant swim.
