When we think of the beaches of Pontevedra, Playa de Major stands as a benchmark, especially for those seeking the perfect combination of a well-preserved natural environment and the possibility of enjoying water activities. Its open orientation to the ocean makes it a magnet for wave lovers, while its vast expanse always allows you to find a peaceful corner. It's a canvas where the blue of the sea meets the gold of the sand, framed by a valuable dune system that reminds us of the importance of caring for these fragile and beautiful ecosystems.

How to Get to Playa de Major

Getting to Playa de Major is relatively easy, given its strategic location and the good connections in the area. We always recommend planning the trip, especially if you're coming during the high season, to avoid surprises. From the city of Pontevedra, the journey is short and very pleasant, following the PO-308 road that runs along the coast. If you're coming from farther away, the AP-9 motorway is your best ally, with clear exits towards the O Salnés region and, specifically, towards Sanxenxo.

By Car

The car is, without a doubt, the most comfortable option to get to Playa de Major. The beach has a large free parking area, although in July and August it fills up quite quickly, so we advise you to arrive early if you want to secure a good spot. The directions are clear once you approach the Portonovo or A Lanzada area, as the beach is located between these two points. The road running parallel to the coast offers spectacular views, making the journey part of the experience.

By Public Transport

Although the car is the most popular, there are also public transport options. During the summer season, bus lines connect Sanxenxo and Portonovo with the beaches in the area, including Major. It's advisable to check the updated schedules at the stations or on the transport companies' websites, as they may vary. We, for the flexibility it offers, usually opt for the car, but it's good to know there are alternatives.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Major welcomes us with fine, golden sand, the kind that invites you to walk barefoot for hours, feeling its softness under your feet. Its texture is perfect for spreading out a towel, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply relaxing in the sun. The width of the sandy area is one of its strong points; even on the busiest days, we never feel crowded, we always find our personal space.

As for the water, the characteristics of the Atlantic are unmistakable. The waters of Major are crystal clear and, as is usual on the beaches of Pontevedra, tend to be cool, a real pick-me-up on hot summer days. They usually have moderate waves, making it an ideal place for practicing water sports like surfing or bodyboarding. However, it's important to pay attention to the lifeguards' instructions, as on windy days or during spring tides, the currents can be more intense. The transparency of the water allows us to admire the sandy bottom, although it's not a beach especially suited for snorkeling due to possible turbidity from the movement of the sand.

Services and Facilities

One of the aspects we most value about Playa de Major is the quality and quantity of its services, essential for making our beach day as comfortable and pleasant as possible. It's no coincidence that this beach is annually awarded the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies the excellence of its waters, environmental management, and the quality of its services.

• Lifeguards: A team of professionals watches over our safety, especially important on a beach with some waves. Their watchtowers are strategically located.
• Showers and Toilets/WCs: Essential for washing off the sand and salt before heading home, and for our comfort throughout the day. They are well-maintained and accessible.
• Parking: As already mentioned, its large parking area greatly facilitates access, although you need to arrive early during the high season.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: At the beachfront, we find several 'chiringuitos' offering everything from soft drinks and ice creams to light meals and snacks. They are perfect for a break without moving too far from the sand. In the surrounding area, and a short drive away, the restaurant offering is very varied, with options for all tastes and budgets.
• Sun Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: For those who don't want to carry their own equipment, there is the possibility of renting sun umbrellas and sun loungers, adding an extra level of comfort to the day.
• Sports Area: We often find beach volleyball nets set up, and the sandy area itself invites you to practice sports like beach soccer or paddleball.
