How to get to Playa Amarilla

Getting to Playa Amarilla in Mazarrón is part of the adventure. Do not expect to find large signs or direct access from a main road. This is precisely what gives it that semi-virgin cove charm. It is located in the Bolnuevo area, a small coastal enclave known for its famous Gredas, rock formations eroded by wind and water. From Bolnuevo, access to the cove is usually via dirt tracks or pedestrian paths that wind through vegetation and cliffs.

Car access and parking

If we come by car, the most practical thing is to head towards Bolnuevo. Once there, we can find some informal parking areas near the Gredas or on the surrounding streets, especially if we visit outside the high season. From these points, we will have to continue on foot along a relatively short path, which may present some difficulty for people with reduced mobility or with baby strollers. We advise wearing comfortable footwear prepared for a bit of walking. The reward, upon arriving and contemplating the cove, makes any effort worthwhile.

Public transport

Public transport in this area of Mazarrón can be limited, especially to reach more secluded coves like Playa Amarilla. Buses usually connect Puerto de Mazarrón with Bolnuevo, but from there, the final leg to the cove will always be on foot. We always recommend checking updated schedules, but for this type of destination, the flexibility of a private vehicle is usually the best option.

It is fine sand with an intense golden hue, which contrasts wonderfully with the turquoise blue of its waters. It's the type of sand that sticks just enough but comes off easily, making it very pleasant.

The temperature is usually very pleasant during the summer months, and refreshing in spring and autumn, inviting us to dive in without a second thought. As we have already mentioned, Playa Amarilla is distinguished by its wild and natural character. This means we should not expect the infrastructure we would find on more urbanized beaches. The beauty of this place lies precisely in its authenticity and the absence of large constructions or mass services.

Basic services

Officially, the beach has an informal parking area nearby, which is a great help for those of us traveling by car. However, it does not have showers, public toilets, chiringuitos on the sand, or umbrella and sunbed rentals. We always advise our visitors to come prepared, bringing everything necessary for the day: water, something to eat, an umbrella, and of course, a bag to collect all our waste and keep the cove as pristine as we found it. If we are looking for more complete services, the nearby town of Bolnuevo or Puerto de Mazarrón offer a wide range of options, from restaurants to shops and supermarkets, just a few minutes' drive away.

Best time to visit

Choosing the right time to visit Playa Amarilla can make a big difference in our experience. While each season has its charm, we have our preferences for enjoying its tranquility and beauty to the fullest.

Spring and early summer

For us, the months of May, June, and early July are ideal. The climate is mild, with pleasant temperatures that already invite a swim, but without the stifling heat of mid-summer. Furthermore, the influx of visitors is considerably lower than in August, allowing us to enjoy the cove with a peace and intimacy hard to find at other times. The surrounding nature is in full splendor, and the days are long, perfect for exploring and relaxing.
