Introduction
If there is a place on the Malaga coast that embodies the essence of what it means to 'escape' and 'reconnect with nature', that is, without a doubt, Playa de las Alberquillas. Located in the idyllic municipality of Nerja, this gem of the Malaga coast presents itself to us as a true virgin paradise, a sanctuary of peace and beauty that invites us to leave the bustle behind and immerse ourselves in the serenity of its waters and the splendor of its surroundings. We, as passionate beach tourism enthusiasts, have visited countless coves and sandy beaches, but few have captivated us as much as this one, for its uniqueness and its unspoiled atmosphere.
Playa de las Alberquillas is not just any beach. It is part of the impressive Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area, a protected area of incalculable ecological value that stretches along the coast, from Nerja to Almuñécar. This natural enclave guarantees us a landscape of majestic cliffs plunging into the sea, native Mediterranean vegetation carpeting the slopes, and, above all, transparent waters that are a gift for the senses and a magnet for lovers of marine life. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the only sound breaking the silence is the gentle murmur of waves breaking on the shore and the occasional song of seabirds nesting on the cliffs. It is, in short, an experience that goes beyond a simple sun and sea bath; it is a complete immersion in tranquility and natural beauty.
We consider it one of those Nerja beaches that must be visited at least once in a lifetime if you seek a different experience. It is ideal for those who yearn for a more authentic experience, away from the crowds and excessive tourist development that often characterizes other areas of the coast. Here you will not find large hotel complexes, noisy beach bars with loud music, or oversized infrastructure; and precisely therein lies much of its charm and its power of attraction. It is an invitation to adventure, to conscious exploration, and to enjoying nature in its purest and most stripped-back state. Get ready to discover a magical corner where natural beauty manifests itself in all its splendor and where every visit becomes an unforgettable memory of the Mediterranean essence.
How to Get to Playa de las Alberquillas
Getting to Playa de las Alberquillas is part of the adventure and, at the same time, the secret to its preservation and its tranquil, uncrowded atmosphere. We always say that the best beaches often require a little effort to be reached, and this one, without a doubt, is no exception. The beach is strategically located between the towns of Nerja and Maro, heading east towards the province of Granada, and is fully integrated within the aforementioned Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area. To access it, the most practical and usual option is by car, although it is essential to be attentive and well-informed.
From Nerja, the journey is relatively straightforward. We must take the old N-340 road heading east, towards Almuñécar. We will pass the signposted turnoff to Maro and continue a few more kilometers, delving into the heart of the natural area. It is important to know that the entrance to Playa de las Alberquillas is not signposted with large tourist signs or flashy indicators, which, again, helps maintain its essence as a hidden cove. We strongly recommend being very attentive to the small 'Playa' indicators or, even better, using a GPS navigation system to locate the exact point. There is a small improvised parking area, often on the roadside or on an unpaved dirt clearing, just before a bridge crossing a dry stream. It is crucial to park with maximum caution and respect for the environment, avoiding obstructing the passage of other vehicles or, more importantly, damaging the delicate native vegetation surrounding the area.
Once we have parked the car, the second and most picturesque part of the journey begins: the descent on foot to the beach. From the road, a dirt and stone path starts, winding steeply down the cliffside. This path, although not excessively long (we estimate about 10-15 minutes at a leisurely pace, depending on each person's agility), does have a considerable slope and can be uneven in some sections, with loose stones and level changes. We strongly advise wearing comfortable and appropriate footwear, such as sports shoes or sandals with good grip, and avoiding flip-flops or open footwear if we don't want to slip or have any discomfort. It is a descent that, although it may seem a bit demanding on the way back (the climb is always harder and requires more effort), rewards us with spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean and the cove itself that certainly justify every step. The reward, at the end of the path, is the sight of the cove opening up before us, a visual spectacle that makes us forget any tiredness and immediately immerses us in an atmosphere of peace and beauty.
It is essential to remember that, as it is a protected natural environment, we must be extremely respectful of the environment at all times. We always carry a specific bag with us to collect our own waste and, if possible, some of what we find along the way that is not natural. There are no trash cans or containers on the beach, so everything we bring up, we must take back down to the car. The conservation of this authentic natural paradise depends largely on the responsibility and ecological awareness of each visitor. The relative ease of access, in compa
