However, Playa de la Galera breaks that stereotype to offer us something different. How to Get to Playa de la Galera

Getting to Playa de la Galera is relatively simple, although it requires a small detour from the busier routes, which contributes to its more secluded atmosphere. If we're coming from Estepona center, the most comfortable way is to take the A-7 highway towards Algeciras. The beach is located west of the urban center of Estepona, a little beyond the marina and some of the city's better-known beaches. We must pay attention to the exits indicating 'Bahía Dorada' or 'Costa Natura', as the beach extends through this area. The distance from Estepona center is approximately 5-7 kilometers, which translates to about 10-15 minutes by car, depending on traffic.

Access and Parking

Once we take the appropriate exit from the highway, access to the beach is via small local roads that wind between residential areas and more natural terrain. Don't expect to find a large, paved, and signposted parking lot like at other more touristy beaches. Here, parking is usually more informal. There are several areas where we can park the car on the shoulders of secondary roads or in small cleared areas near the beach accesses. We always recommend arriving early, especially during the summer months, to secure a good spot and avoid unnecessary circling. From where we park, access to the sand is via paths, some with a slight slope, which adds a touch of adventure to the arrival. It's important to wear comfortable footwear for the journey and, if we're carrying a lot, perhaps consider a sturdy beach cart that can navigate the small obstacles along the way. The good news is that once we arrive, the reward of the beach's natural beauty more than compensates for the small effort.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de la Galera offers a very particular sensory experience in terms of its composition. It's not the typical fine, golden sand beach that many are used to in other parts of the Andalusian coast. Here, we find a fascinating mix that gives it its unique personality: a combination of dark sand, pebbles, and small stones that alternate along its length. This particularity makes walking barefoot a different experience; some stretches are sandier and softer, while others require a bit more attention due to the presence of cobblestones. We love this diversity, as each step is a discovery and reminds us of the beach's wilder, more natural character.

It's not uncommon to encounter small schools of fish, starfish, and other marine species that inhabit its seabed. The water temperature, as is usual in the Mediterranean, is pleasant during the summer months, warming up from June and staying warm well into September. Even in spring and autumn, the bravest can enjoy a refreshing swim. It is, in short, a place where water quality is one of its greatest virtues, guaranteeing an unbeatable swimming experience and the chance to explore a fascinating underwater world.

As we've already mentioned, Playa de la Galera is known for its more natural and less urbanized character, which means we shouldn't expect the same level of services we would find at more central beaches in Estepona or other Costa del Sol destinations.
