Introduction
If there is one place in Lanzarote that encapsulates the essence of the volcanic island, its mystery and its untamed beauty, that is undoubtedly Playa del Risco. Located in the municipality of Haría, in the north of the island, this beach is not for everyone. It is a destination for those who seek adventure, who appreciate nature in its purest state and who are willing to make a little effort to find their own personal paradise. For us, it is one of those experiences that stay etched in the memory, a treasure that, once discovered, calls you back.
Playa del Risco stretches majestically beneath the imposing Famara cliffs, offering breathtaking views from the famous Mirador del Río. But it is not just a view; it is a destination. With its fine golden sand and crystal-clear waters inviting you for a swim, this virgin beach is the perfect refuge to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and reconnect with nature. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves and the wind are the only soundtrack, and where one feels truly small before the grandeur of the Canarian landscape.
How to get to Playa del Risco
Getting to Playa del Risco is, in itself, part of the adventure and what keeps it so pristine. Do not expect easy access; this beach is earned. There are two main ways to reach this hidden Eden:
On foot: The Camino de los Gracioseros
The most common and exciting route is via the known 'Camino de los Gracioseros'. This trail, which in past times was the only means of communication between Lanzarote and La Graciosa for the inhabitants of the neighboring island, begins near the Mirador del Río. It is a fairly steep and zigzagging descent down the cliff, taking approximately 45 to 60 minutes. Despite the difficulty, the views along the way are absolutely spectacular, with La Graciosa and the Chinijo Archipelago unfolding before your eyes. We strongly recommend wearing proper hiking footwear, enough water and sun protection. The climb back up is demanding, so you need to plan your time and energy well.
By boat
For those who prefer a more relaxed approach or simply want to enjoy the views from the sea, there is the option of arriving by boat. Some boat tours departing from Órzola or even from Caleta de Famara offer the possibility of approaching Playa del Risco. It is an excellent alternative to enjoy the north coast of Lanzarote from another perspective and disembark directly on the sand, avoiding the effort of the trail. This option is ideal if you are traveling with people with reduced mobility or young children, although the beach itself does not have full accessibility.
Parking
If you decide to go on foot, you can park your vehicle in the free parking available near the Mirador del Río. From there, you will have to locate the start of the trail, which is usually well signposted.
The sand and the water
Playa del Risco welcomes us with an expanse of fine, golden sand, a real treat for the feet after the descent. It is soft sand, perfect for spreading out a towel and enjoying the Canarian sun. The beach is quite long, which makes it easy to find a quiet spot, even on days with more visitors (which, realistically, is never many).
The waters here are of astonishing clarity, with turquoise and emerald tones that irresistibly invite you for a swim. Being protected by the cliffs, the waters are usually quite calm and peaceful, ideal for swimming and relaxing. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, making it pleasant. However, as we always say, caution is key: although conditions are usually good, it is an unguarded spot, so you must be aware of your limitations and respect the ocean. It is a true privilege to immerse yourself in these waters, feeling the direct connection with the volcanic nature of Lanzarote.
Services and facilities
This is where Playa del Risco shows its true wild nature. If you are looking for a beach with chiringuitos, lifeguards, showers or sunbed rentals, this is not your place. Playa del Risco is a completely virgin beach, without any infrastructure or services. And, honestly, that is precisely what makes it so special and attractive to those of us who visit it.
We always advise those who venture to visit it to bring everything they need: plenty of water, some food or snacks, sun protection (cream, hat, sunglasses), a towel and, of course, a bag to take all our waste back with us. The premise is clear: leave the beach exactly as we found it, leaving no trace of our visit. The conservation of this natural paradise depends on all of us. The lack of services is a small price to pay to enjoy such a pristine and authentic environment.
Best time to visit
Lanzarote enjoys a subtropical climate that allows you to enjoy its beaches practically all year round. However, for us, the best time to visit Playa del Risco and the island in general are spring (April, May, June) and autumn (September, October, November).
During these months, temperatures are very pleasant, ranging between 20°C and 28°C, with less wind than at other times of the year and radiant but not excessively scorching sun. Furthermore, we avoid the summer crowds, which allows us to enjoy the beach with even more tranquility and space. The sea maintains a fantastic temperature for swimming. The winter months are also a good option to escape the cold of the mainland, although there may be windier days or some sporadic rain. In summer, the heat can be intense, especially during the ascen
