We are not talking about a single beach, but a collection of pristine coves of breathtaking beauty, nestled in the southern tip of the island, within the Los Ajaches Natural Monument. From the moment we set foot on its golden sands and gaze upon the hypnotic turquoise blue of its waters, we understand why it is considered one of the jewels of Lanzarote's beaches.

For us, visiting Playa de Papagayo is more than a simple excursion; it is an experience that transports us to a state of calm and awe. How to Get to Playa de Papagayo

Getting to Playa de Papagayo is part of the adventure, and it's important to be prepared for it. It is located in the municipality of Yaiza, in the south of the island, very close to Playa Blanca. The most common way to access is by car, although it is also possible to reach on foot or by bicycle for the more adventurous.

Access by Car

If we are coming from Playa Blanca, we must take the LZ-703 road heading east. After a few kilometers, we will find a turnoff indicating the way to the Papagayo beaches. It is important to know that access to this area, which is part of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument, has a small entry fee per vehicle (usually around 3 euros, but it may vary). Once the fee is paid, the road becomes a dirt track. It is not a paved road, which helps maintain the pristine character of the area, but requires driving with caution and at low speed. The journey along the track offers spectacular views of the coast before reaching the parking areas, which are also dirt, located near the various coves. We recommend parking in the lot closest to the cove you wish to visit, and from there, a short walk will take you to the sand.

Access on Foot or by Bicycle

For those who prefer a more active experience, Playa de Papagayo is accessible on foot or by bicycle from Playa Blanca. There are coastal trails that allow us to enjoy a pleasant walk with panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and, on clear days, of the neighboring island of Fuerteventura. The walk is approximately 30-45 minutes from the eastern end of Playa Blanca to the first of the Papagayo coves. It is a fantastic option for hiking lovers and for those who wish to avoid the car access fee.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Papagayo is famous for the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters, two characteristics that elevate it to paradise status. When we talk about the sand, we are referring to fine, golden sand, almost white in some spots, which contrasts beautifully with the blue of the sea and the ochre of the cliffs. It is soft, pleasant-to-the-touch sand, perfect for lying down and feeling the warmth of the Canarian sun. The absence of rocks on the shore of the main coves makes access to the water very comfortable and safe.

But it is the water that truly captivates us. The waters of Playa de Papagayo are an intense turquoise color, crystal clear, and surprisingly calm. The natural protection offered by the cliffs against the island's prevailing winds creates a kind of natural swimming pool, where waves are almost non-existent. This calm makes Papagayo an ideal place for swimming, even for the little ones, and invites us to spend hours floating carefree. The underwater visibility is exceptional, making it an excellent spot for snorkeling and observing the rich marine life that inhabits its nearby rocky seabeds. It is an immersive experience that connects us directly with the purest nature of Lanzarote.

Services and Facilities

One of the characteristics that define Playa de Papagayo is its natural and relatively pristine character, which means services and facilities are limited, but sufficient to enjoy the experience without altering its essence. Let's not expect to find the infrastructure of an urban beach, and precisely that is part of its charm.

Chiringuitos and Dining

Although the beach itself is natural, on the surrounding cliffs with spectacular views, there are usually one or two chiringuitos. These establishments offer us the possibility to have a cool drink, a coffee, or even enjoy a simple meal, like fresh fish or Canarian tapas, while contemplating the impressive landscape. They are perfect places to take shelter from the midday sun or to enjoy an unforgettable sunset. It is important to remember that, being the only dining points in the area, they can be quite busy during high season.

Parking and Access

As mentioned when talking about how to get there, the area has large parking areas of dirt, very close to the different coves. Although they are not paved parking lots, they are functional and usually have enough space. It is essential to remember the access fee to the natural park for vehicles. From the parking lots, access to the coves is via small trails or rock stairs, which can make passage difficult for people with reduced mobility or baby strollers.
