How to Get to Playa de la Calera

Getting to Playa de la Calera is relatively easy, and the journey itself is part of the Gomera adventure. If we're coming from La Gomera airport (located near San Sebastián de La Gomera), the best option is to rent a car or take a taxi. The drive will take approximately an hour, winding along mountain roads with breathtaking views that will leave us speechless. It's a road that, although curvy, is in good condition and allows us to appreciate the island's lush vegetation and deep ravines.

For those who prefer public transport, there are bus lines (guaguas) connecting San Sebastián with Valle Gran Rey. Once in Valle Gran Rey, Playa de la Calera is located in the heart of the town, making it easy to access on foot from most accommodations. If we are staying in the higher areas of the valley, such as La Calera or Borbalán, a pleasant downhill walk will lead us directly to the shore. There are nearby parking areas, although they can be busier during high season, so we recommend arriving early if we're coming by car.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de la Calera surprises us with its geological uniqueness. Its sand is of volcanic origin, which gives it a dark, almost black color that absorbs the sun's heat and releases it gently under our feet. It's a fine and pleasant-to-the-touch sand, perfect for walking barefoot or for children to play building sandcastles. The contrast with the white of the wave foam and the green of the surrounding vegetation creates a visually stunning landscape that invites us to take out our camera at every moment.
