How to Get to Playa del Cañón

If we come by car from Málaga or Almería, the A-7 motorway will practically leave us at its doorstep. Once in Motril, signs to the port or Playa de Poniente will guide us without problems. The beach has nearby parking areas, both free and paid during the high season, which greatly facilitates access and saves us the headache of finding where to park our vehicle.

For those who prefer public transport, Motril has a network of urban buses connecting the city center with the beach areas. Checking local schedules and routes is always a good idea, especially if we don't want to worry about the car. From the Motril bus station, there are lines that bring us close to the coast, leaving us a short walk from Playa del Cañón. Furthermore, for the more adventurous or those staying nearby, a bike ride or walk from the center of Motril is a charming option, allowing us to enjoy the landscape and coastal atmosphere before reaching our final destination.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive features of Playa del Cañón is, without a doubt, its particular sand. Here you won't find the fine golden sand of other coasts, but a fascinating mix of dark sand and small pebbles that give it a unique appearance. This darker tone absorbs the sun's heat, making the sand pleasantly warm, although we always recommend wearing suitable footwear for walking along the shore, especially during the midday hours. The presence of pebbles, far from being an inconvenience, adds a natural and rustic touch to the landscape, and invites us to search for shells and stones polished by the sea.

As for the water, that of Playa del Cañón is generally calm waters and notably clean. The protection offered by the structures of the Motril port and, at times, small breakwaters or natural groynes, contribute to the gentle waves, making it a perfect natural pool for bathing. The water temperature on the Tropical Coast is also very pleasant for much of the year, allowing us to enjoy long swims from spring until well into autumn. The clarity of its waters, although not that of a virgin cove, allows us to see the seabed at shallow depths and, with a pair of diving goggles, discover the small fauna that inhabits its rocks and among the pebbles, delighting the little ones and snorkeling enthusiasts.

This gives us great peace of mind, especially if we are traveling with children. Furthermore, the characteristic chiringuitos (beach bars) right on the beach cannot be missed, where we can enjoy refreshments, ice creams, or delicious 'pescaíto frito' (fried fish) without straying too far from the shore. Many of them also offer umbrella and sunbed rentals, allowing us to relax comfortably without having to carry all the equipment from home. The presence of restaurants in the vicinity expands our dining options, offering us everything from traditional food to more international dishes. And for those who want a bit more activity, it's possible to find equipment rental points for water sports like paddle surfing or kayaking nearby, or even designated areas for beach games.
