How to Get to Playa de Melicena

Getting to Playa de Melicena is relatively straightforward, although it requires taking some secondary roads that, in turn, offer impressive panoramic views. If you're coming from the city of Granada, the journey will take approximately an hour and a half, following the A-44 motorway towards the Tropical Coast and then turning off onto the N-340. The beach is located on the stretch of coast connecting the municipalities of Polopos and Albuñol, within the jurisdiction of Sorvilán, a mostly inland village.

By Car

The car is, without a doubt, the most comfortable option for reaching Playa de Melicena. From the N-340, which runs along the entire coast, you'll find signs for the turnoff towards Melicena. The road, although with curves typical of the coastal terrain, is in good condition and will guide you directly to the shore. We always recommend using a GPS, as signage can be somewhat sparse in some areas. Once you arrive, you'll find informal parking areas along the road or in open spaces near the beach. It's important to remember that during the peak summer months, these spaces can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to arrive early if you want to secure a good spot.

Public Transport

Public transport to Playa de Melicena is limited. There are bus lines connecting larger towns like Motril or Salobreña with nearby coastal towns like La Mamola or Albuñol. However, from these towns, you would need to take a taxi or a ride-hailing service to get directly to the beach, as there is no direct bus connection to Melicena. For this reason, to fully enjoy the freedom of exploring the area, the car is the alternative we always recommend.

The Sand and Water

One of the most distinctive features of Playa de Melicena is its particular composition. Here you won't find the fine, golden sand typical of other Andalusian coasts. Instead, the beach consists of mixed sand of a dark hue, mixed with small pebbles and gravel. This combination gives it a very natural and wild appearance, and although it might not be the most comfortable for lying directly on without a towel, it gives it a rustic charm that captivates us.

The waters of Playa de Melicena are, without exaggeration, one of its greatest attractions. They are famous for their crystalline transparency and cleanliness. The color of the sea ranges from light turquoise near the shore to a deep blue further out. The entry into the water is generally gentle, making it safe for swimmers of all ages. The absence of strong currents and the prevalence of sunny days with a gentle breeze contribute to its waters remaining calm and inviting for a good dip or for snorkeling. We have been amazed by the clarity of the water, which allows you to easily see the seabed, inviting underwater exploration.

Services and Facilities

Despite its more natural and less developed character, Playa de Melicena has a series of services that make the stay more comfortable and pleasant for visitors. Don't expect massive beach infrastructure, but rather the essentials to enjoy a day of sun and sea.

Basic Services

During the peak summer season, the beach usually has showers to rinse off the salt and sand after swimming. It's also common to find a lifeguard service that ensures the safety of bathers, which gives us great peace of mind, especially if we're with children. Regarding dining, the beach has at least one or two chiringuitos (beach bars) that offer drinks, ice cream, and simple dishes of fresh fish and local cuisine. These chiringuitos often also have sun umbrellas and loungers for rent, which is very practical if you don't want to carry your own equipment. The parking, as we already mentioned, is informal but sufficient in most cases.

Absence of Blue Flag and Accessibility

It's important to note that Playa de Melicena usually does not hold the Blue Flag distinction. This is not due to a lack of water quality—which is excellent—but rather because it's a beach with less development of the infrastructure and services required for this certification. In cua
