Located in the charming town of La Herradura, within the municipality of Almuñécar, this beach is a true hidden treasure that invites disconnection and enjoyment of nature. It is not your typical fine golden sand beach, but rather a cove of pebbles and stones that gives it a particular charm and a more authentic character.

For us, Playa de los Berengueles represents the essence of the Costa Tropical: a place where the Mediterranean meets the foothills of the Sierra de la Almijara, creating a landscape of contrasts that will take your breath away. Its waters, protected by the bay of La Herradura, are exceptionally calm, making it a paradise for both families with young children and lovers of snorkeling and diving. This beach, although not as extensive as others in the area, offers everything needed for an unforgettable day. Its atmosphere is more tranquil and select, away from the hustle and bustle of more crowded beaches. It is the perfect place for those seeking a more intimate beach experience, where water quality and the beauty of the surroundings are the true protagonists. From the moment we set foot on its shore, we know we have arrived at a special place, a refuge where nature embraces us.

How to Get to Playa de los Berengueles

Getting to Playa de los Berengueles is relatively straightforward, which makes it even more attractive. We always recommend the car as the most comfortable option for exploring the Costa Tropical and its wonders. From Almuñécar, the journey is short, following the old N-340 towards Málaga, or via the A-7 motorway with the exit at La Herradura. Once in La Herradura, the beach is easily signposted, just before reaching the Marina del Este marina.

Car Access and Parking

If we are coming from Granada city, the journey will take us approximately an hour and a half via the A-44 and then the A-7. From Málaga, the time is similar. The advantage of Playa de los Berengueles is that, being a semi-urban beach, it has some parking options. In the streets adjacent to the beach, we can find parking areas, although in high season they can be quite busy. It is advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot. There are also some paid public parking areas in La Herradura that are not too far from the beach.

Public Transport

For those who prefer not to drive, there is the option of public transport. There are bus lines connecting Almuñécar and La Herradura with other towns in the province of Granada and Málaga. Once in La Herradura, the beach is a short walk from the town center or from the main bus stops. However, for greater freedom of movement and the possibility to explore the surroundings, the car remains our main recommendation.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de los Berengueles, it is essential to highlight its particular composition. Here we will not find the typical fine golden sand we often associate with the beaches of southern Spain. Instead, we are greeted by a mix of pebbles and stones, with some stretches of coarser sand. This gives it a very natural look and is one of its hallmarks. Although it may feel a bit different to the touch at first, it has the advantage that the water remains incredibly clean and clear, as the pebbles do not get stirred up by the waves like fine sand does.

The waters of Playa de los Berengueles are, without exaggeration, spectacular. Its location in a bay protected by cliffs means the sea is almost always calm, with little to no waves. This, combined with the transparency of its waters, creates ideal conditions for swimming. Underwater visibility is excellent, making it one of the best spots on the Costa Tropical for snorkeling and diving. We have spent hours exploring its seabeds, teeming with life, and we are always surprised by the richness of its ecosystem.

The entry into the water is gentle, although the slope can vary slightly. For children, the calmness of the waters is a plus, allowing them to play and splash safely. The water temperature, especially in the summer months, is very pleasant, inviting long swims and leisurely enjoyment. It is, in short, a place where the quality of the swim is an experience in itself, away from the crowds and with the guarantee of a well-preserved natural environment.
