How to Get to Playa de La Herradura

Getting to Playa de La Herradura is relatively straightforward, whether we come by car or use public transport. La Herradura is strategically located on the N-340, which runs along the coast, and also has easy access from the Mediterranean Motorway (A-7). If we're coming from Málaga or Granada, exit 305 on the A-7 will take us directly to the turnoff for La Herradura. The road is scenic, offering us spectacular views of the coast as we approach.

Once in the town, finding parking can be a challenge, especially during the summer months. There are several public parking areas along the promenade and adjacent streets, but they tend to fill up quickly. Our recommendation is to arrive early if we visit the beach during the high season to secure a good spot. There are also some private paid parking lots that can be a good option for greater convenience. If we prefer public transport, there are intercity buses connecting La Herradura with Almuñécar, Granada, and Málaga, facilitating access for those not traveling by car. The nearest bus station with important connections is in Almuñécar.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Playa de La Herradura, we can't help but highlight the uniqueness of its sand and the impressive quality of its waters. The beach has a mixed composition, with fine gravel and pebbles predominating in some areas, mixed with darker, more compact sand. This gives it a natural charm and a different texture compared to the more common golden sand beaches. Walking barefoot is a pleasant experience, and the absence of very fine sand means the water remains exceptionally clear, even with an influx of bathers.

The waters of the bay are, without exaggeration, one of its greatest attractions. They are calm, of a turquoise blue that invites swimming and exploration. The natural protection provided by the cliffs on both sides of the bay minimizes waves, creating a perfect natural pool for swimming, especially for the little ones. But what really sets it apart is its underwater richness. The clarity of the water and the presence of Posidonia seagrass meadows and rock formations make La Herradura one of the best diving and snorkeling spots in all of Andalusia. We can spend hours observing the diversity of fish, crustaceans, and algae that inhabit its seabed, a truly immersive and fascinating experience.

Playa de La Herradura is very well equipped to ensure a comfortable and pleasant stay for all its visitors. Along its two-kilometer length, we find a wide range of services and facilities that cover practically all needs. To begin with, safety is a priority, and therefore we have active Lifeguard stations during the bathing season, ensuring the peace of mind of bathers.

Regarding comfort, the beach has numerous Showers and public Bathrooms/WCs, maintained in good condition. For those looking to relax in the sun, there are Sunbed and umbrella rental points, perfect for enjoying a worry-free day at the beach. The gastronomic offering is excellent, with a great variety of Chiringuitos and Restaurants right on the beach where we can taste the area's delicious fresh fish, rice dishes, and other Mediterranean specialties. Furthermore, for the more active, there are Sports Areas where you can practice sports like beach volleyball, and several establishments that offer Equipment Rental for water sports like kayaking, paddle surfing, windsurfing, or, of course, diving and snorkeling. Parking, although it can be tricky in August, is available in several areas near the promenade.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa de La Herradura will largely depend on the type of experience we are looking for, as each season offers a particular charm. We, personally, find that spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) are the ideal times.
