Today we delve into the heart of the south of Gran Canaria to explore one of its most recent and, at the same time, most debated gems: Playa de Tauro. Located in the sunny municipality of Mogán, this beach has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, evolving from a pebble cove to an expanse of golden sand, the result of an ambitious regeneration project. For us, it has become a destination that, despite its artificial origin, offers a haven of tranquility and an ideal space for those seeking to escape the bustle of the island's more crowded beaches.

When we think of Gran Canaria beaches, images of extensive dunes or lively bays often come to mind. However, Playa de Tauro stands out with a different proposition. We find ourselves before a beach that invites calm, with serene waters that gently kiss the shore and fine, golden sand that has been brought in to recreate paradise. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves is the only clock and the Canarian sun envelops us with its warm embrace. For us, it is the perfect setting to disconnect, read a good book, or simply contemplate the deep blue horizon of the Atlantic.

Its strategic location, very close to other points of tourist interest such as Puerto Rico or Puerto de Mogán, makes it an attractive option for those who wish to explore the area without giving up the peace of a less crowded beach. Playa de Tauro offers us that much-desired balance between accessibility to services and the feeling of being in a special, almost intimate place. It is, without a doubt, one of those beaches that, once you discover it, becomes a personal refuge you always wish to return to on your next visit to the island.

How to Get to Playa de Tauro

Getting to Playa de Tauro in the municipality of Mogán is relatively straightforward, given its excellent connection to the road network in the south of Gran Canaria. We always recommend planning the journey to make the most of the experience.

By Car

If we choose the car, which is the most comfortable option for most visitors, the beach is just a few minutes from the GC-1 highway. If we are coming from Gran Canaria Airport or from Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, we simply need to take the GC-1 heading south and follow the signs towards Arguineguín, Puerto Rico, and finally, Tauro. Once we take the Tauro exit, we will enter a residential and tourist area. The beach is well signposted, and we will find parking areas, although in high season they can fill up quickly. It is advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot. The journey from the airport usually takes about 30-40 minutes, while from Las Palmas it can extend to 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic. The comfort of having our own vehicle allows us to explore the surroundings with complete freedom, something we highly value on our getaways.

By Public Transport

For those who prefer not to drive, public transport is a viable alternative. The Global 'guaguas' (buses) connect the Tauro area with the main tourist hubs and cities on the island. The lines that pass near Playa de Tauro are those covering the route between Puerto de Mogán and Las Palmas, making stops in the various coastal towns and resorts. We will need to get off at the stop closest to Tauro and walk a few minutes to the beach. While not as direct as by car, it is an economical and sustainable option. We recommend checking the Global schedules in advance, as frequency can vary depending on the day of the week and the season.

By Taxi or VTC

Another comfortable option, especially if we are carrying luggage or beach gear, is to take a taxi or a vehicle with a driver (VTC). From any point in the south of the island, such as Puerto Rico, Amadores, or Puerto de Mogán, the journey will be short and the cost reasonable. From Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés, the price will be a bit higher, but it remains a practical alternative if we are looking for speed and comfort. We, on occasion, choose this option when we want to completely forget about parking and arrive directly on the sand to start enjoying without delay.

The Sand and the Water

When stepping onto Playa de Tauro, the first thing that catches our attention is its sand. It is a golden, fine, and artificial sand, the result of an ambitious regeneration project that transformed what was once a pebble cove. For us, this transformation has been a success in terms of the comfort it offers. Walking barefoot on this sand is a pleasure, and finding a good spot to lay out a towel is easy, as the beach has a generous surface area. Unlike other volcanic sand beaches in Gran Canaria, here we find a light tone that intensely reflects the sunlight, creating a beautiful contrast with the turquoise blue of the sea.

The predominant type of ground is, as we have already mentioned, sand. This makes it very pleasant for bathing and for the little ones, who can play and build sandcastles without worrying about rocks. However, it is important to be aware that, being a regenerated beach, the composition of the sand and the seabed may have some particularities. Although most of the seabed is sandy, in some spots, especially towards the ends or in deeper areas, we might find some rock or pebble that was part of the original bed. We always advise wearing water shoes if we plan to explore a bit beyond the shoreline, although for normal bathing they are usually not necessary.
