Its crescent shape, gently curved, invites us to walk along its shore or venture into its calm waters. How to get to Playa de Riells

Getting to Playa de Riells is, fortunately, quite straightforward, making it an accessible destination for many. We always recommend planning the route in advance, especially if travelling during high season, to avoid setbacks and be able to enjoy every minute from the very first instant.

By car

For most visitors, the car is the preferred option due to the comfort and flexibility it offers. From Barcelona or the south, we take the AP-7 motorway towards France and take exit 5 (L'Escala-Empúries). Once we leave the motorway, we follow the signs to L'Escala. The C-31 road will also take us directly to the municipality from Girona or inland. L'Escala is well signposted and, once in the town, the signs to the Riells area are clear. The beach has several parking areas, both paid and some free ones on the surrounding streets, although the latter tend to fill up quickly in summer. We usually look for parking on secondary streets a little further from the seafront to avoid the higher prices and, at the same time, take a short walk to the sand.

By public transport

If we prefer not to drive, public transport is a viable alternative. L'Escala is connected by bus lines to cities like Girona or Figueres, where there are train stations (AVE in Girona). From Girona, there are regular buses that will take us directly to the centre of L'Escala. Once there, Playa de Riells is a distance we can cover on foot in about 15-20 minutes, or we can opt for a local taxi if we have a lot of luggage or prefer greater comfort. Although it's not the most direct option to get to the beach itself, it's a good way to enjoy the scenery and arrive without parking worries.

Accessibility

One of the strong points of Playa de Riells is its excellent accessibility. We have observed that significant efforts have been made to make it an inclusive beach. It has access ramps for people with reduced mobility, wooden walkways that facilitate transit to the shore and, even in high season, adapted toilet services and amphibious chairs. This allows us to state that it is a beach designed for everyone, which we greatly value and always highlight in our recommendations. Families with baby strollers will also find access and movement along the promenade very comfortable.

The sand

The sand at Riells is fine and golden, incredibly soft to the touch. Walking barefoot on it is a delight, a sensation that connects us directly with nature and invites us to relax. It's perfect for children to play building sandcastles without difficulty, and for adults to lie down comfortably without feeling discomfort. The sand is constantly cleaned, a detail that does not go unnoticed and contributes to the general feeling of well-being. We always appreciate when a beach is so well maintained, as it makes a big difference in the visitor's experience.

The water

The waters of Playa de Riells are calm, shallow and, in general, very clean. Its gentle slope into the sea is ideal for the little ones, who can splash and play safely without parents having to worry excessively. The warmth of the Mediterranean in this area, especially during the summer months, makes bathing always a pleasure. We have noticed how the water usually maintains a pleasant temperature, inviting long periods of enjoyment. The clarity of the water, often crystalline, allows us to see the sandy bottom, which adds an extra level of confidence and appeal for bathing and snorkelling in the rockier areas near the ends of the beach.
