How to get to Playa de Portlligat

Getting to Playa de Portlligat is part of the adventure and charm of the Costa Brava. First, we must head to Cadaqués, a town accessed by a winding but spectacular road, the GI-614. This road, with its curves and panoramic views, prepares us for the beauty that awaits. Once in Cadaqués, the path to Portlligat is well signposted. The cove is located approximately one and a half kilometers from the town center, making it accessible both on foot and by car.

Access by car

If we choose to go by car, we will find parking near the cove, although it is important to know that in high season it can be limited and paid. We recommend arriving early, especially in the summer months, to secure a good spot. From the parking lot, it is a short and pleasant walk to the shore, allowing us to admire the landscape before stepping onto the beach. Let's not forget that we are in a protected natural environment, so we must always respect the signage and the environment.

Access on foot

For those who prefer to walk, a stroll from the center of Cadaqués to Playa de Portlligat is a charming experience. The path winds between fishermen's houses, Mediterranean gardens, and viewpoints with spectacular views. It is a walk of about 15-20 minutes, perfect for whetting the appetite and enjoying the sea breeze and the scent of pine. It is an excellent way to soak up the atmosphere of this very special corner of the Cadaqués beach.

The sand and the water

Playa de Portlligat stands out from many other beaches of Girona due to its peculiar composition. Let's not expect to find a vast expanse of fine sand here. Instead, we are greeted by a shore of pebbles and small stones, mixed with some coarser sand, which we classify as a type of 'mixed' sand on a predominantly 'pebble' ground. This characteristic, far from being a drawback, adds a rustic and authentic touch to the cove. We advise wearing suitable footwear for walking on the stones, such as water shoes or sandals, for greater comfort.

The waters of Portlligat are, without exaggeration, one of its greatest treasures. They are incredibly crystal-clear, with shades ranging from light turquoise to deep blue, depending on the light and depth. The cove is well protected from the wind, which ensures a generally calm sea, ideal for a relaxing swim. The underwater visibility is excellent, inviting snorkeling and discovering the marine life that inhabits the rocks.
