Introduction
Today we delve into one of the most emblematic and photogenic corners of the Costa Brava: Playa de l'Illa Roja. Located in the charming municipality of Begur, in the province of Girona, this cove is much more than a simple stretch of sand; it's a postcard landscape that etches itself into the retina and heart of everyone who visits. Its name, meaning 'Red Island', comes from the imposing reddish rock that emerges majestically from its waters, dividing the cove and giving it an unmistakable personality.
When we think of Girona beaches, Playa de l'Illa Roja is undoubtedly one of the first that comes to mind if we seek authenticity and natural beauty. It is not a typical beach, with large infrastructures or easy access; on the contrary, it is a sanctuary of nature that preserves its wild and pure essence. Its waters, of astonishing transparency shifting from turquoise to emerald, invite you to dive in and explore a seabed full of life. It is a place where time seems to stand still, where the sound of the waves and the cry of seagulls are the only soundtrack, and where the beauty of the surroundings connects us directly with the essence of the most authentic Mediterranean. We feel privileged every time we have the opportunity to step on its sand and contemplate its uniqueness.
How to Get to Playa de l'Illa Roja
Getting to Playa de l'Illa Roja is part of the adventure and charm of this place. Do not expect a simple and direct car access right to the sand, as precisely its relative difficulty is what has helped preserve its natural and pristine environment. We are in Begur, a town that, while known for its coves, requires a bit of effort to access its most precious jewels.
From Begur Center
If we come from the center of Begur, the most common route is to head towards the Sa Riera area. However, to get to Playa de l'Illa Roja, the ideal is to follow the signs to the cove of Sa Riera and, once there, look for the famous Camí de Ronda. This coastal path is the soul of the Costa Brava and allows us to connect various coves and beaches on foot.
Access via the Camí de Ronda
The most picturesque and common way to access l'Illa Roja is via the Camí de Ronda. We usually recommend parking near Sa Riera beach or in one of the designated parking areas (which in summer are usually paid and fill up quickly) and undertaking a short walk. From Sa Riera, we will take the Camí de Ronda heading south (towards Aiguafreda). It's a walk of about 10-15 minutes along a well-marked path but with some sections of stairs and uneven terrain. It is important to wear comfortable and suitable footwear for walking.
Parking
As we have already mentioned, parking near the cove is practically non-existent. Most visitors choose to leave their car in the parking areas of Sa Riera or, if possible, on some of the more distant adjacent streets, and then walk. In high season, finding a free spot can be a challenge, so we advise arriving early in the morning or at dusk to avoid crowds. Sometimes, the best option is public transport if you want to avoid parking worries, although it does not go directly to the cove.
The Sand and the Water
When we talk about the physical characteristics of Playa de l'Illa Roja, we refer to a unique sensory experience that connects us with nature in its purest state. The combination of its sand and waters is what makes it such a special place among the Girona beaches.
Type of Sand
The sand of l'Illa Roja is coarse, of a golden hue that contrasts beautifully with the red of the rock and the blue of the sea. Do not expect the fineness of other more touristy beaches; here, every grain of sand has its own texture and shine. This coarse sand has the advantage of not sticking to the body as much as fine sand, making it easier to clean off when leaving the water. Furthermore, it contributes to the transparency of the waters, as it is not stirred up as easily.
The Water's Transparency
The waters of Playa de l'Illa Roja are, without exaggeration, spectacular. Their transparency is almost crystalline, allowing us to see the seabed with astonishing clarity. The color varies from an intense turquoise in the shallower areas to a deep emerald where the water becomes deeper. This cleanliness is largely due to the absence of strong currents and the natural protection provided by the surrounding cliffs. It is a true paradise for swimming enthusiasts and, as we will see later, for snorkeling.
The Seabed
The seabed of l'Illa Roja is a mosaic of sand and rock. In the areas closest to the shore, coarse sand predominates, ideal for laying down a towel. However, as we venture into the sea, rocky formations begin to appear, which are home to rich marine biodiversity. It is precisely this mix of seabed types that makes its waters so attractive for underwater exploration. The iconic red rock that gives the cove its name also submerges, creating an impressive underwater landscape worth discovering.
Services and Facilities
This is where Playa de l'Illa Roja stands apart from most tourist beaches and reaffirms its wild and natural character. If you are looking for a beach with all the comforts, chiringuitos, lifeguards, and sunbeds, this is not your place. And it is precisely that absence of infrastructure that, in our opinion, makes it such a desired and valued destination.
Absence of Services
We always warn those who ask us that Playa de l'Illa Roja does not have any type of service. It does not ha
