Introduction
Today we delve into one of those corners that, once known, become an unforgettable memory and a constant desire to return. We're talking about Playa de Grifeu, a hidden yet accessible gem in the heart of the Costa Brava, in the charming municipality of Llancà, in the province of Girona. For us, it is the epitome of what a family beach should be: a canvas of golden sand that blends with waters so transparent they invite you to dive in without a second thought. It's not a beach for large crowds, which gives it an atmosphere of serenity and exclusivity that is greatly appreciated.
Playa de Grifeu stands out for its natural beauty and its orientation, which protects it from the strongest winds, creating an ideal microclimate to enjoy the sun and the sea for much of the year. Its shell-like shape, surrounded by gentle rock formations and Mediterranean vegetation, gives it a particular charm that makes it especially attractive to those seeking a balance between the comfort of services and the authenticity of the landscape. It's a place where time seems to stand still, where stress dissolves with the soft murmur of the waves, and where each sunset paints the sky with a breathtaking palette of colors. If you're looking for a beach experience that combines relaxation, safety for the little ones, and a visually stunning setting, you've come to the right place. We feel privileged to be able to share with you the secrets and charms of this wonderful destination.
How to Get to Playa de Grifeu
Getting to Playa de Grifeu is relatively easy, and the route itself is part of the experience, offering spectacular views of the Costa Brava. We usually opt for the car, as it offers the most flexibility to explore the surroundings as well. From the city of Girona, the journey is approximately an hour and a half, following the AP-7 northbound and then turning off onto the N-260, which will take us directly to Llancà. Once in the municipality, the signage to the beaches, and particularly to Grifeu, is quite clear. The beach is located north of the urban center of Llancà, in a more residential and quiet area.
By Car
As mentioned, the car is the most comfortable option. The good news is that, unlike other more crowded beaches on the Costa Brava, in the vicinity of Playa de Grifeu there are usually options for free or regulated paid parking, especially on the adjacent streets. It's true that in the middle of August finding a spot in the early afternoon can be a challenge, but with a little patience or by arriving early, we always find a space. We recommend looking for parking on the streets near Avinguda de Grifeu or in the designated areas. The proximity of the parking to the sand is a plus, especially if we're traveling with children or a lot of luggage.
By Public Transport
For those who prefer public transport, Llancà has a train station (Rodalies de Catalunya) that connects it with Figueres and other towns. From Llancà station, Playa de Grifeu is about a 20-25 minute walk away. There are also intercity bus services connecting Llancà with Figueres and other coastal towns. However, to get directly to the beach from the center of Llancà, a taxi or a pleasant walk are the most viable options. We, while valuing the comfort of the car, sometimes opt for the train to disconnect from the road and enjoy the scenery during the journey, then take a walk to the beach.
The Sand and the Water
When we first set foot on Playa de Grifeu, what surprised us most was the quality of its sand. It's fine sand, of a golden hue, that feels soft underfoot and invites you to walk barefoot along the shore. There are no annoying rocks when entering the water, which is a great relief, especially for young children or for those who, like us, enjoy long walks along the shore without worrying about the terrain. The fineness of the sand also makes it perfect for building sandcastles, an activity that always brings a smile to our faces and takes us back to childhood.
The waters of Playa de Grifeu are, without exaggeration, crystal clear. Their transparency is such that, on sunny days, we can see the seabed with total clarity several meters deep. They are calm waters, with very moderate waves, making them an exceptionally safe place for swimming. The absence of strong currents and the shallow depth near the shore make it ideal for the little ones to play and splash around without risk. The color of the water ranges from turquoise blue to emerald green, depending on the sunlight and the reflection of the sky, creating a visual spectacle that captivates us every time we visit. The water temperature, especially in summer, is very pleasant, allowing for prolonged swims without feeling cold. It's a true pleasure to immerse yourself in these waters and feel the calm wash over you.
Services and Facilities
Playa de Grifeu stands out not only for its natural beauty but also for the excellent range of services and facilities that make it comfortable and functional for all visitors. For us, the presence of quality services is essential for a complete beach experience, and Grifeu more than delivers in this aspect. We feel at ease knowing our basic needs are covered, allowing us to fully enjoy the day without worries.
