Introduction
Welcome, travelers, to one of the most unique and vibrant corners of the Costa Brava! Today we want to transport you to Playa de Empuriabrava, in the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries, province of Girona. This is not just any beach destination; we are talking about the 'Venice of the Costa Brava', a place where houses overlook navigable canals and marine life intertwines with terrestrial life in a fascinating way. Playa de Empuriabrava is the heart of this residential marina, a wide and welcoming sandy beach that promises days of sun, fun, and relaxation for all.
When we think of Costa Brava beaches, rocky coves and rugged landscapes often come to mind. However, Empuriabrava offers us a different perspective: an extensive beach with golden, fine sand, incredibly calm and shallow waters, perfect for family enjoyment. We have had the opportunity to explore it in depth and can assure you it is a place that leaves no one indifferent. Its cosmopolitan atmosphere, the wide range of services, and the beauty of its surroundings make it an excellent choice for your next vacation.
How to Get to Playa de Empuriabrava
Getting to Playa de Empuriabrava is relatively easy, given its excellent location and the area's good connections. We explain the main options so you can plan your trip without complications:
By Car
Undoubtedly, the car is the most comfortable and flexible option to reach Empuriabrava, especially if you are coming from other parts of Spain or Europe. The town is very well connected via the AP-7 (Mediterranean Highway). If you are coming from the south, you should take exit 4 (Figueres / Roses) and follow the signs to Roses/Empuriabrava via the C-260. If you are coming from the north, exit 3 (Figueres Nord) will take you on a similar route. Once in Empuriabrava, the signage to the beach is clear and you will find several parking areas, both paid and free (although the latter tend to be busier during high season).
- From Barcelona: Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. Take the AP-7 towards Girona/France.
- From Girona: Approximately 40 minutes. Take the C-66 and then the C-260.
- From the French border (La Jonquera): Approximately 30 minutes via the AP-7.
By Public Transport
Although the car is most common, it is also possible to arrive by public transport, combining train and bus.
- By train: The nearest train station is Figueres, which has high-speed (AVE/TGV) and regional connections. From there, you can take a bus or a taxi to Empuriabrava. Figueres station is a key point, as it connects with Barcelona, Girona, and other major cities.
- By bus: From Figueres, several bus lines connect to Empuriabrava. Local companies offer regular services, especially during the summer season. It is advisable to check schedules in advance, as they may vary.
By Plane
If you are coming from outside Spain, the nearest airports are:
- Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO): This is the closest, about 50 km away. From here, you can rent a car, take a taxi, or a bus to Girona train station and then continue as described. There are some direct bus connections during high season.
- Barcelona-El Prat Airport (BCN): About 160 km away. From Barcelona, you can take a high-speed train to Figueres or rent a car directly at the airport.
The Sand and Water
One of the biggest attractions of Playa de Empuriabrava is, without a doubt, its sand and water. We were delighted with the quality of this sandy beach, which stretches for almost two kilometers, offering generous space for everyone's enjoyment.
The Sand
The sand at Playa de Empuriabrava is fine and golden, very pleasant to the touch. This makes it a perfect place to walk barefoot, build sandcastles with the little ones, or simply spread out a towel and relax without the nuisance of stones. Unlike other Costa Brava beaches, where we often find pebbles or coarser sand, a soft texture that invites relaxation predominates here. The ground type is, therefore, purely sand, which guarantees exceptional comfort from the moment we step onto the beach.
The Water
The waters of Empuriabrava are another of its strong points. They are calm, transparent, and shallow, making them ideal for swimming, especially for families with young children. The bay where the beach is located is protected, which minimizes waves and creates perfect conditions for safe swimming. The water quality is excellent, a fact that is endorsed year after year with the awarding of the Blue Flag, a distinction that certifies the high environmental and service quality of the beach. Diving into these crystal-clear waters is a delight, and their temperature is usually very pleasant during the summer months, inviting long swims and water games.
