It is one of those gems that, while not always in the media spotlight, offers a genuine and deeply rewarding beach experience. Located in the heart of Alt Empordà, very close to the majestic Cap de Creus Natural Park, Canyelles is a haven of peace that invites us to disconnect from the hustle and bustle and immerse ourselves in natural beauty.

This cove, of intimate size and with a particular charm, welcomes us with a mix of coarse sand and pebbles that give it a unique character. Its waters, of astonishing transparency, mirror the sky and invite us to a refreshing and safe swim. It is the perfect place for those seeking a beach without large crowds, where nature is still the protagonist and where the sound of the waves and the cry of seagulls are the only soundtrack. While it does not have a Blue Flag, its cleanliness and the care of its surroundings are evident, reflecting respect for this natural spot. We dare say that, for many, Canyelles is the very essence of the Costa Brava in its purest and most accessible version.

How to Get to Playa de Canyelles

Getting to Playa de Canyelles in Llancà is relatively straightforward, although it requires a short route on secondary roads that already immerse us in the idyllic landscape of Cap de Creus. We always recommend coming by car, as it offers the greatest flexibility to explore not only the beach but also the charming nearby towns and coves.

By Car

From Girona, we will take the AP-7 towards France and then exit at junction 4 (Figueres/Roses). We will continue on the N-II and then on the C-260 towards Roses and Llançà. Once in Llançà, we will follow the signs to the port and, from there, the signs that will guide us to the Canyelles area. The road is paved and in good condition, although the last stretches can be a bit narrow and winding, something common on this coast. There are parking areas close to the beach, although, as expected for a cove of these characteristics, space can be limited, especially during July and August. Our recommendation is to arrive early to secure a good spot and avoid the stress of searching for parking. Some parking sections may be paid during high season, so it's good to have some cash or the relevant payment app.

Public Transport

While public transport does not leave us directly on the sand of Canyelles, it is possible to reach Llançà by train or bus. From Llançà train station, which has connections to Figueres and thus to the Rodalies and AVE network, or from the bus station, we could take a taxi or, if we are adventurous, embark on a pleasant 20-30 minute walk to the cove. This last option allows us to enjoy the coastal views before reaching our destination, but we must consider that the return journey, especially under the summer sun, can be demanding. For us, the comfort of the car is unbeatable in this area.

The Sand and Water

The experience of Playa de Canyelles begins the moment our feet touch its unique surface. We are faced with a type of mixed sand, which combines the fineness of golden sand with the presence of small pebbles and gravel. This particularity gives it a rustic and natural character, very typical of the coves of the Costa Brava. Walking barefoot, we notice how the pebbles massage our feet, a different sensation from that of fine sand beaches, but equally pleasant. For some, this mixed composition may feel a bit rough, so we always advise bringing aqua shoes or sandals for greater comfort, especially if we plan to explore the rocky areas on the sides.

Regarding the type of underwater floor, sand predominates in the part closest to the shore, which mixes with rocky areas as we go further into the sea. These rock formations are, in fact, one of the great attractions of Canyelles, as they harbor rich marine life that invites exploration. The entry into the water is gentle and gradual, making it safe for children, although we must pay attention to depth changes in the rocky areas. The absence of large waves and strong currents is a constant in this cove, protected by its geographical configuration, which guarantees a calm and relaxing swim.

But if there is something that captivates us about the waters of Canyelles, it is their astonishing transparency. They are crystal-clear waters, of an intense turquoise color that allows us to see the seabed with exceptional clarity. This quality is due, in part, to the rocky nature of the coast and the good water quality. When we dive in, the visibility is excellent, making this beach a paradise for snorkeling. We can observe small schools of fish, starfish, and varied marine flora, making each dive a small adventure. The water temperature, typically Mediterranean, is pleasant during the summer months, warming up enough to allow long swims. Even in spring and autumn, the bravest can enjoy a revitalizing dip. For us, the purity and beauty of its waters are, without a doubt, the greatest treasure of Playa de Canyelles.
