Introduction

From the moment we set foot on Cala de la Fosca, in the heart of the Costa Brava, we know we've arrived at a special place. Located in the charming municipality of Palamós, in the province of Girona, this beach is a true treasure that combines natural beauty with a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. Its name, 'La Fosca', refers to the dark rock that divides it in two, but the atmosphere here is anything but somber; in fact, it radiates a contagious luminosity and joy that invite disconnection and enjoyment.

For us, Cala de la Fosca represents the essence of a perfect Mediterranean beach. With its fine golden sand, its crystal-clear waters in turquoise hues, and its characteristic 'Pedra del Dau' —a cubic rock that majestically emerges from the sea— it offers a postcard-perfect landscape. It's a destination that attracts both families with young children, thanks to its shallow and calm waters, as well as couples and groups of friends looking for a place to relax, practice water sports, or simply enjoy a good 'chiringuito' by the sea. It is, without a doubt, one of the Girona beaches that deserves to be explored calmly and enjoyed to the fullest.

How to get to Cala de la Fosca

Getting to Cala de la Fosca is relatively easy, as it is well signposted from Palamós. If we come by car, the best option is to take the C-31 and turn off towards Palamós. Once in the municipality, we follow the signs to 'La Fosca'.

By car

• From Girona city: We will take the C-65 towards the Costa Brava and then the C-31 towards Palamós. The journey takes approximately 45-50 minutes.
• From Barcelona: The most common route is via the AP-7 to exit 9 (Lloret de Mar/Sant Feliu de Guíxols) and then the C-35 and C-31 towards Palamós. The trip usually takes 1 hour and 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on traffic.

By public transport

Although the car is the most comfortable option, it is also possible to get there by public transport. There are bus lines connecting Palamós with Girona and Barcelona. Once at the Palamós bus station, we can take a local bus that takes us close to Cala de la Fosca or, if we prefer, a taxi. During the summer months, Palamós usually has a tourist 'trenet' service that connects the center with the main beaches, including La Fosca, which is a fun option for families.

The sand and water

Cala de la Fosca captivates us immediately with the quality of its sand and the transparency of its waters. The sand is fine and of a very pleasant golden tone, perfect for spreading out a towel and enjoying the sun or for the little ones to build their sandcastles without difficulty. Walking barefoot on it is a pleasure, and its cleanliness is one of the reasons why this Palamós beach receives the Blue Flag year after year.

The waters are, without exaggeration, spectacular. They are usually very calm and shallow at the shore, making them an ideal and safe place for children and the elderly to bathe. The color varies from a light turquoise near the shore to a deeper blue as we go further out, always maintaining a clarity that makes it easy to see the seabed. This, combined with the presence of small rocky areas on the sides of the cove and around the 'Pedra del Dau', makes it an excellent spot for snorkeling and observing local marine life, from small fish to starfish. The water temperature, especially in summer, is very pleasant, inviting long swims and leisurely enjoyment.

One of the strong points of Cala de la Fosca is the large quantity and quality of services it offers, designed to ensure a comfortable and pleasant experience for all visitors. We feel very well taken care of here, as we hardly miss anything.

Among the available services, we highlight:

• Lifeguard Service: During the bathing season, the beach has a lifeguard service that watches over the safety of bathers, providing great peace of mind, especially if we are with children.
• Showers and Toilets/WC: Essential for freshening up and maintaining hygiene after a day at the beach. The toilets are usually well maintained.
• Parking: As mentioned, there are several parking options nearby, facilitating access to the beach.
• Chiringuitos and Restaurants: Along the promenade bordering the cove, we find an excellent gastronomic offer. From cozy chiringuitos where you can have a refreshment or an ice cream, to restaurants with terraces offering delicious Mediterranean cuisine and fresh seafood. It's a delight to be able to have lunch or dinner with sea views.
• Equipment Rental: For lovers of water sports, there are points where you can rent kayaks, paddle surfboards, and other equipment, allowing us to explore the coast from another perspective.
• Sunshades and Sunbeds: For those who prefer not to carry their own equipment, there is the possibility of renting sunshades and sunbeds, which adds an extra level of comfort to our beach day.
• Sports Area: Often, a sports area is set up for playing beach volleyball or other activities, promoting active leisure.
• Children's Area: Thinking of the little ones, the beach usually has a children's area or nearby playground where they can have fun safely.
