How to get to Cala de Aigua Xelida

Getting to Cala de Aigua Xelida beach is part of the adventure, and although it's not an odyssey, it does require some planning, especially in high season. We always recommend good footwear and patience, as the access is not as direct as in other urban beaches.

Access by car

The main access is usually by car. From Palafrugell, you should take the road towards Tamariu and then follow the signs to Aigua Xelida. The road is winding and passes through a beautiful Mediterranean landscape. There is a parking area, but it's important to consider that it is quite limited and, in the summer months, fills up quickly. Our advice is to arrive early in the morning to secure a spot. Some sections may be paid or have restrictions in high season, so pay attention to the local signage.

Final stretch on foot

Once you park, the path to the cove is on foot. It involves a descent down some stone steps which, although safe, can be a bit steep and are not suitable for people with reduced mobility or baby strollers. This small 'effort' is what helps maintain the semi-virgin and exclusive character of the cove. The descent takes a few minutes, and each step will bring you closer to the stunning view that awaits you. The way back, of course, is uphill, so save some energy!

The sand and the water

Cala de Aigua Xelida surprises us with a combination of elements that make it unique. The beach is not of the usual fine, golden sand, but presents a charming mix that gives it a wilder, more natural character.

Type of sand and ground

When you step onto Cala de Aigua Xelida, you'll notice the ground is of a mixed type. Coarse sand in golden and ochre tones predominates, dotted with small pebbles and sea-polished stones. This composition, although it may not be the most comfortable for lying down directly without a towel, is perfect for preventing sand from sticking too much and for enjoying a more authentic feeling, connected with nature. The rocks flanking the cove also form small platforms where one can sit and contemplate the landscape.

The water temperature, typical of the Costa Brava, is refreshing in summer, ideal for combating the heat and feeling totally renewed. It is, without a doubt, one of the coves with the cleanest and most inviting waters among the beaches of Girona.

Services and facilities

Due to its wilder nature and difficult access, Cala de Aigua Xelida does not have the service infrastructure we would find on larger, more urbanized beaches. And honestly, that's part of its charm.

Available services

We have verified that the services are quite limited. In the high season months (July and August), it is common to find a Lifeguard service, which gives us extra peace of mind when enjoying the waters. Regarding Parking, as mentioned, there is an area at the top, but it's not a service 'on the beach' as such. Don't expect to find showers, public toilets, beach bars (chiringuitos) right on the sand, or umbrella and sunbed rentals. This means you must be prepared and bring everything you need for your day: water, food, an umbrella, towels, and everything you consider essential for your comfort.

Our recommendation

Precisely because of this scarcity of services, the experience at Cala de Aigua Xelida is more authentic. It invites us to a more conscious and respectful type of tourism towards the environment. Bring a bag to collect your waste and leave the cove just as you found it. If you're looking for a livelier atmosphere with bars and restaurants right on the beach, this is not your cove. But if what you long for is tranquility, natural beauty, and a genuine connection with the sea, then Aigua Xelida awaits you with open arms.
