How to Get to Playa de Santiago (Deba)

Getting to Playa de Santiago (Deba) is relatively straightforward, and the transport options are varied, making it accessible to all types of visitors. The town of Deba is well-connected, integrating perfectly into the Basque Country's transport network.

By Car

If you choose to drive, the AP-8 motorway (Bilbao-San Sebastián) is the main route. You should take the exit towards Deba, and once in the town, follow the signs to the beach. The journey from Bilbao or San Sebastián is approximately 45-60 minutes, depending on traffic. We should mention that, especially in high season, parking can be a challenge. There are regulated parking zones (OTA) in the center of Deba and near the beach, as well as some public parking, although we recommend arriving early to secure a good spot.

By Public Transport

• Train (Euskotren): One of the most comfortable and scenic ways to arrive is by using the Euskotren train. The line connecting Bilbao with San Sebastián has a stop in Deba. The station is just a few minutes' walk from the beach, making it a fantastic option to avoid parking worries and enjoy the coastal scenery during the journey.
• Bus: Several bus lines connect Deba with the main cities and towns of Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. Check the routes and schedules of Lurraldebus or Bizkaibus, depending on your starting point. The bus stop is usually in the town center, also a short distance from the beach.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Santiago (Deba) welcomes us with fine, golden sand that invites us to walk barefoot and lay out a towel to enjoy the sun. It's comfortable sand, ideal for children to play and build sandcastles, and for adults to relax and be caressed by the sea breeze. Its size, although not among the largest on the Basque coast at approximately 200 meters long, is sufficient to find our own space, even on the busiest days.

The waters of the Cantabrian Sea here are usually of excellent quality, which has earned it the Blue Flag recognition on numerous occasions, a distinction that certifies the quality of its waters, environmental management, safety, and the services it offers. The waters are generally clean and, although the Cantabrian can be a bit cooler than the Mediterranean, they are refreshing and very pleasant for swimming, especially in the summer months. The beach has moderate waves, making it safe for swimming and suitable for water activities like paddle surfing or kayaking, always with caution and respecting the lifeguards' instructions.

An interesting aspect of this beach, as with many on the Basque coast, is the effect of the tides. The visible strip of sand changes significantly between high tide and low tide. During low tide, the beach expands, revealing an even larger space for enjoyment and allowing exploration of small rock pools or formations that are exposed.
