How to Get to Playa de Orrua

Getting to Playa de Orrua is part of the adventure and, fortunately, it is quite accessible, although it requires a little planning. We always recommend using a car for greater comfort, especially if you're carrying surf equipment or planning to spend the whole day.

By Car

From Getaria or Zarautz, the most common access is via the N-634 road, which runs along the coast. You need to watch for signs to the beach or the Orrua neighborhood. There is an enabled parking area, not very large, but sufficient for the beach's usual influx. It's important to arrive early in high season to secure a spot, as it's a meeting point for many local surfers. The GPS coordinates (43.298611, -2.259722) are very useful for getting there without problems.

By Public Transport

While there is no direct bus stop at Playa de Orrua, you can take a bus from San Sebastián, Zarautz, or Getaria to the center of Getaria. From there, the journey to the beach is approximately 3-4 kilometers, which can be done on foot (it's a pleasant walk if the weather is good) or by taxi. For the more adventurous, the walk offers spectacular views of the coast.

The Sand and Water

The uniqueness of Playa de Orrua is directly reflected in its composition. It's not the typical beach of fine, uniform sand, but rather presents a fascinating combination that makes it unique. We would classify it as a mixed sand beach, where golden, fine sand intertwines with small rocks and pebbles, especially at the ends and when the tide is low. This mixed ground type gives it a wilder, more natural character, inviting us to explore its rock formations and small tide pools.

The water at Playa de Orrua is, as on most of the Basque coast, of excellent quality. Its hues vary between deep blue and emerald green, reflecting the purity of the Cantabrian Sea. It's a beach with constant waves, which makes it the paradise it is for surfing in Getaria. However, this also means caution is needed, especially if you're not used to currents or rough waters. The water temperature is characteristic of the Cantabrian Sea, refreshing in summer and colder in winter, which doesn't deter the more intrepid surfers who don their wetsuits year-round.

• Showers: We find basic showers, much appreciated by surfers to wash off salt and sand after a session. They are functional and integrate well into the environment.
• Parking: As already mentioned, it has a parking area that, although not huge, is usually sufficient. On days of high influx, especially in summer or with good waves, it can fill up quickly, so planning ahead is key.
• Lifeguard Service: During the summer season, the beach has a lifeguard service, which provides extra peace of mind for swimmers and surfers. It's vital to always follow their instructions and respect the signaling flags.
• Chiringuitos: Don't expect large complexes, but there is often a small chiringuito or mobile food truck, especially in the summer months, where you can get a refreshing drink or a snack. They are perfect for recharging energy between waves or simply to enjoy the sunset with a drink in hand.

Best Time to Visit

The choice of the best time to visit Playa de Orrua depends largely on what you're looking for. We, from our experience, can break down the options:

Summer (June - September)

• For swimmers and families (with older children): Summer is ideal. Temperatures are more pleasant, the sun shines stronger, and the lifeguard service is active. Although the waves can still be considerable, there are calmer days. It's the busiest time, but Orrua rarely feels as crowded as other beaches. The chiringuitos are open and the atmosphere is livelier.
• For beginner or intermediate surfers: Summer waves are usually less powerful, making them perfect for those who are starting out or want to perfect their technique without major challenges.
