How to Get to Playa de Hondarribia

We find ourselves in a privileged location, very well connected by both land and air, facilitating access from different points on the peninsula and Europe. If we choose the car, the main access route is the AP-8 motorway, which connects Bilbao and San Sebastián with the French border. We must take the exit towards Irún/Hondarribia, and from there, the signs will guide us directly to the town and the beach in a few minutes. It is important to consider that, especially during the peak summer season, parking can be a challenge. However, Hondarribia has several parking areas, some paid and others free (though farther away), distributed near the beach, the marina, and the center. We always recommend arriving early to secure a good spot.

For those who prefer public transport, the options are equally convenient. From San Sebastián, we can take buses from the Lurraldebus or Euskotren companies that make regular and direct trips to Hondarribia, leaving us a short distance from the beach. If we are coming from other cities, we can arrive by train to Irún station, which is an important railway hub with connections from Renfe and Euskotren. Once in Irún, a short trip by urban bus or taxi will take us without problems to our beach destination. The proximity to Irún, a border city, also opens the door to international train connections, which is a great advantage.

But if there is one way to get there that we find particularly exciting and with a touch of adventure, it is by plane. San Sebastián Airport (EAS) is, in fact, located in Hondarribia itself, just minutes from the beach. This makes it an ideal option for those looking for a quick and hassle-free getaway, with domestic flights connecting us to major Spanish cities. Furthermore, for those in the French Basque Country, crossing the border is an experience in itself. From Hendaye, the famous 'txalupa', a small traditional boat, offers us a picturesque and quick journey across the Bidasoa River, landing us directly at the Hondarribia marina, from where the beach is a pleasant walk away. This option is not only practical but also gifts us beautiful views of the estuary and both shores, marking a truly special start or end to the day.
