Introduction
Welcome to a corner of Fuerteventura where time seems to stand still and natural beauty completely envelops us: Playa del Águila. Located in the charming municipality of La Oliva, very close to the picturesque village of El Cotillo, this beach is one of those gems that remind us why we love the Canary Islands. It is not your typical beach with vast stretches of sand and massive tourist infrastructure, but rather one of the small, serene coves that make up the lagoon system known as 'Los Charcos' or 'Las Lagunas de Cotillo'. Its name evokes the majesty of the birds of prey that sometimes soar through the island's skies, and its atmosphere invites us to fly far away from daily stress.
When we talk about Playa del Águila, we think of a canvas of fine white sand, contrasting with the turquoise blue of exceptionally calm and crystal-clear waters. It is a place where the Atlantic shows its kindest side, protected by natural reefs that create natural pools, perfect for a relaxing swim or for children to enjoy safely. We are faced with a beach that offers an unparalleled feeling of peace, an idyllic setting to disconnect, read a good book, or simply contemplate the horizon. It is, without a doubt, one of the Fuerteventura beaches that captivates us with its authenticity and serene atmosphere.
How to Get to Playa del Águila
Getting to Playa del Águila is relatively straightforward, although it will require a small detour from the busier routes, which contributes to its wild and tranquil charm. If we are coming from Fuerteventura Airport (FUE), the drive will take approximately 45-50 minutes. We will take the FV-2 towards Puerto del Rosario and then the FV-1 heading north towards Corralejo, until we reach the turnoff for the FV-101 or FV-10 towards La Oliva and El Cotillo. It is important to pay attention to the signs for El Cotillo, as Playa del Águila is located nearby, to the north of the village.
From Corralejo, one of the main tourist hubs on the island, the journey is shorter, about 20-25 minutes. We will follow the FV-1 heading south and then take the turnoff onto the FV-101 or FV-10, following the signs to El Cotillo. Once in El Cotillo, we must continue along the road that runs along the coast to the north, passing the Faro del Tostón. Playa del Águila is one of the coves we will find in this lagoon area, and there are usually small informal parking spots on the sides of the dirt track that leads to the coast. We recommend using a GPS navigator, as the coves are not always individually signposted, but the 'Las Lagunas' area is well known. The final access to the sand is usually on foot via small paths, which adds a touch of adventure to our arrival.
The Sand and the Water
The sand at Playa del Águila is simply dazzling. It is of an immaculate white color and a fine texture that slips through your fingers, inviting you to walk barefoot and feel the softness under your feet. This type of sand, so characteristic of the northern Fuerteventura beaches, is the result of the erosion of seashells and corals, which gives it that light, bright tone that contrasts wonderfully with the blue of the ocean. It is the kind of sand that invites you to lay out a towel and enjoy long hours of sun, feeling embraced by nature.
As for the water, an unforgettable experience awaits us. The waters of Playa del Águila are exceptionally transparent, of an intense turquoise color that reminds us of Caribbean postcards. The presence of submerged volcanic reefs acts as a natural barrier, protecting the cove from the stronger Atlantic waves and creating natural pools of very calm, shallow water. This makes it an ideal place for swimming, even for children or those who prefer calm to waves. The visibility is excellent, allowing us to enjoy the seabed and aquatic life with just a snorkel mask. The water temperature, although it is the Atlantic, is usually pleasant for much of the year, inviting us to take a refreshing dip.
Services and Facilities
One of the main attractions of Playa del Águila is precisely its natural and largely untouched character. This means we should not expect to find a large number of services or infrastructure directly on the sand. Its charm lies in its almost virgin state, which allows for total immersion in nature. We will not have showers, toilets, beach bars ('chiringuitos'), or umbrella and sunbed rental services on the cove itself. It is, in essence, a beach to enjoy in its purest form.
However, this does not mean we are completely isolated. Being very close to the village of El Cotillo, we will have access to all necessary amenities just a few minutes' drive away. In El Cotillo we will find a varied selection of restaurants and cafes to sample local cuisine, supermarkets to stock up on drinks and snacks, and shops to buy anything we might need for our beach day. Furthermore, the village has pharmacies, health centers, and other basic services. For those who value tranquility and scenic beauty over on-the-sand amenities, Playa del Águila is a perfect choice, as long as we come prepared with everything we need for our day of sun and sea. Parking, although informal, is usually available on the tracks near the coves, facilitating access.
