Introduction
From our perspective as experts on the beaches of Fuerteventura, Playa de los Charcos is undoubtedly one of those gems that forces us to redefine the concept of paradise. We are not talking about an ordinary beach, but a fascinating complex of coves and natural pools that stretch along the northern coast of El Cotillo, in the municipality of La Oliva. It is a place where nature has sculpted a dreamlike landscape, combining the force of the Atlantic with the tranquility of its waters protected by volcanic reefs.
When we think of Playa de los Charcos, an image of serenity and pristine beauty comes to mind. Its sands, of an immaculate white, contrast spectacularly with the dark volcanic rocks and the crystal-clear turquoise of its waters. It is a place that invites disconnection, exploration, and above all, to enjoy the magic of Fuerteventura in its purest state. Here, time seems to stand still, and the only noise that accompanies us is the gentle murmur of the ocean and the cry of seagulls. It is a destination we highly recommend to anyone looking for a different beach experience, away from the hustle and bustle and crowds.
How to get to Playa de los Charcos
Getting to Playa de los Charcos is relatively straightforward, which makes it even more attractive to visitors. We always recommend a rental car as the best option to explore Fuerteventura at our own pace, and this case is no exception. From Puerto del Rosario, the capital, the journey takes approximately 45 minutes via the FV-10 and FV-109, heading towards El Cotillo.
Once we reach El Cotillo, we must follow the signs to the El Tostón Lighthouse. Playa de los Charcos is located precisely in the surroundings of the lighthouse, extending to the south. There are several unpaved, free parking areas where we can leave our vehicle without any problems, which greatly facilitates access to these coves. From the parking lot, access to the different natural pools is on foot, via sand and rock paths, so we recommend wearing comfortable and suitable footwear. The walk is short and allows us to discover the beauty of the place with every step.
The sand and the water
The most distinctive feature of Playa de los Charcos is, without a doubt, the peculiarity of its environment. The sand is a very fine and soft ocher white, a delight for our feet. This sand mixes with the volcanic rock formations that dot the coast, creating a landscape of contrasts that we find truly unique. The type of ground is, therefore, mixed, offering us both areas of pure sand and others where the black rocks are the protagonists.
But what really makes us fall in love with this place are its waters. Protected by natural reefs, the pools of Playa de los Charcos offer a calm and safe swim, ideal for all ages. The color of the water ranges from the most vibrant turquoise to deep blue, always with a transparency that allows us to see the seabed with total clarity. The water temperature is usually pleasant all year round, inviting us to dive in and enjoy a refreshing dip. It is a paradise for snorkeling, where we can observe a variety of marine life in its shallow waters.
Services and facilities
As we have already mentioned, Playa de los Charcos is a natural environment, and therefore, services are not as abundant as on a conventional urban beach. However, it has the essentials for our comfort. The Parking service is, as we have already indicated, very accessible and free in the vicinity of the lighthouse, which facilitates arrival by car.
Regarding safety, during the high season and the summer months, it is common to find Lifeguard service in the area, although we always recommend taking extra precautions, especially when exploring the rocky areas. It is important to consider that we will not find showers, toilets, beach bars (chiringuitos), or umbrella and sunbed rentals directly in the coves. For any needs, the nearby town of El Cotillo offers a wide range of services, including restaurants, supermarkets, and pharmacies, just a few minutes' drive away. We always advise bringing our own food and drink, as well as everything needed to spend the day comfortably.
Best time to visit
From our experience, Playa de los Charcos is a destination we can enjoy practically all year round, thanks to Fuerteventura's enviable climate. However, there are times that, in our opinion, are more conducive to a visit.
- Spring (March to May): For us, it is one of the best times. Temperatures are mild, the wind is not as strong as in other seasons, and the influx of tourists is lower than in summer. It is ideal for enjoying the tranquility of the natural pools.
- Autumn (September to November): Similar to spring, autumn gives us sunny and warm days, with the sea still at a good temperature. The trade winds are usually milder, contributing to a more relaxed experience.
- Summer (June to August): This is the high season, with more people, but the conditions for swimming are excellent. It is when the Lifeguard service is most active. We advise going early in the morning to find a good spot.
- Winter (December to February): Although temperatures are cooler, Fuerteventura remains a sunny destination. It is perfect for escaping the European cold, although the wind can be more persistent. The pools (charcos) remain a refuge from the waves.
