Introduction

We venture into one of the most spectacular and enigmatic corners of the beaches of Fuerteventura: the legendary Playa de Cofete. Located in the remote and wild Jandía Natural Park, within the municipality of Pájara, this beach is not just any destination; it is an experience, a journey to the heart of the most indomitable and sublime nature. Stretching over 12 kilometers, Cofete presents itself as a strip of fine, golden sand, kissed by the powerful waves of the Atlantic and flanked by an imposing mountain range that seems to protect it from the outside world. It is a place where time stands still, where the grandeur of the landscape makes us feel small and connects us with the purest essence of the island.

From the first moment we spot Cofete from the viewpoint above, we understand we are witnessing something extraordinary. The immensity of the beach, the force of the ocean, the solitude and the silence (broken only by the roar of the waves and the whistle of the wind) create an almost mystical atmosphere. This is not a beach for seeking beach bars or sun loungers; it is a sanctuary for the adventurous soul, for those seeking authenticity and unfiltered beauty. Here, nature reveals itself in its purest state, reminding us of its power and majesty.

How to Get to Playa de Cofete

Getting to Playa de Cofete is, in itself, part of the adventure. There is no direct paved access, which helps preserve its wild character. The most common route starts from Morro Jable, in the south of Fuerteventura. From there, an unpaved dirt road awaits, somewhat rough and with sections in poor condition, winding through the mountains of the Jandía massif. It is a journey that requires patience and caution. We strongly recommend a 4x4 vehicle, although many visitors do it with regular cars, taking extreme precautions. The journey can take between 45 minutes and an hour from Morro Jable.

Transport Options:

• Private or Rental Car: If we choose this option, it is vital to drive slowly and watch out for stones and potholes. Let's make sure our rental insurance covers driving on unpaved roads, as many companies exclude it. At the end of the road, we will find an informal Parking area to leave the car before descending to the beach.
• Regular Bus: There is a regular bus (line 111, operated by Tiadhe) that departs from Morro Jable and arrives at the small hamlet of Cofete, from where it's a short walk to the beach. It is a safe and comfortable option if we prefer not to drive on the dirt road.
• Organized Tours: Several local companies offer 4x4 tours that take us directly to Cofete, including stops at points of interest like Villa Winter and the viewpoint. It is an excellent way to enjoy the landscape without worries.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Cofete welcomes us with an endless expanse of fine, golden sand, stretching as far as the eye can see. Walking barefoot on this sand is a delight, feeling its softness under our feet while the wind caresses our skin. The color of the sand, together with the intense blue of the Atlantic and the ochre tone of the mountains, creates a spectacular color palette, especially at sunrise or sunset.

Regarding the water, we must be honest: the Atlantic Ocean here is powerful. The waves are usually large and the currents, very strong. While the temptation to immerse ourselves in its crystal-clear waters is great, we must exercise extreme caution. Playa de Cofete is not an ideal beach for calm swimming or for inexperienced swimmers. Its force and the absence of lifeguards make it a place for contemplation, for feeling the sea breeze, and for cooling off only at the shoreline, with our feet in the water, always watching the tide. The water temperature is typical of the Canary Islands, cool but pleasant in the warmer months. It is a place to respect nature in its purest state.

Services and Facilities

If we are looking for a beach with all the comforts, Playa de Cofete is not our destination. And that is precisely part of its charm. Here, beauty lies in its lack of artifice and its virgin character. The beach lacks services and facilities in the traditional sense.

Absence of Common Services:

• Showers and Toilets/WC: We will not find any of these facilities. It is essential to be prepared and bring everything we need, as well as take all our trash back with us.
• Beach Bars and Restaurants: There are none directly on the beach. However, in the small hamlet of Cofete, a short distance away, there is a modest and traditional 'chiringuito' or bar-restaurant where we can enjoy a drink or a simple dish, often fresh fish. It is a rustic and authentic experience.
• Lifeguard Service: There is no lifeguard service. This reinforces the need to be extremely cautious with the sea, especially if we are not experienced swimmers.
• Sun Umbrellas and Sun Loungers: Forget about renting equipment. If we wish to protect ourselves from the sun, we will have to bring our own umbrella and towels. The wind can be intense, so a sturdy umbrella is essential.
• Full Accessibility: Due to the access road and the absence of walkways or facilities, the beach is not accessible for people with reduced mobility.
