How to Get to Playa de la Arena

To get to Playa de la Arena in La Frontera, El Hierro, our adventure begins by road. From Valverde, the island's capital, we'll take the HI-1 towards the El Golfo valley, a journey that will gift us impressive panoramic views of the El Hierro geography. Once in the valley, we'll follow the signs towards La Frontera and, subsequently, towards the coastal area.

The beach is not ostentatiously signposted, which contributes to its charm as a hidden treasure. Generally, a well-marked turn-off will lead us to a path that gently descends towards the coast. We'll find a small informal parking area nearby where we can leave our vehicle. We recommend renting a car to move freely around the island, as public transport can be limited in some areas. The final access to the sand is usually a short walk, which will allow us to appreciate the beauty of the landscape before setting foot on the volcanic sand.

The Sand and Water

What impresses us most upon arriving at Playa de la Arena is, without a doubt, its sand. Here you won't find the typical golden or white sand of other beaches. Instead, we are greeted by an intense black volcanic sand, with a coarse texture, often speckled with small pebbles and igneous rocks. This characteristic gives it a wild and distinctive appearance, very typical of El Hierro's geology. Walking barefoot on it is a unique experience, although on the most intense sunny days it can get quite hot, so flip-flops or water shoes can be very helpful.

The waters of Playa de la Arena are generally calm and of astonishing clarity. Their color varies between deep blue and turquoise, depending on the sunlight and depth. The clarity of its waters makes it an excellent place for underwater observation, even without needing to submerge. We'll find a rocky seabed in some areas, ideal for snorkeling, where we can discover the rich marine biodiversity of El Hierro. The absence of strong currents makes it a safe place for a relaxing swim, although always with the usual caution.

Services and Facilities

If you're looking for a beach with a wide range of services, Playa de la Arena might not be your first choice. Precisely, part of its charm lies in its natural and pristine character. Here you won't find beach bars, umbrellas, or sun loungers for rent, nor services like showers or lifeguards. It's a beach for enjoying nature in its purest state, which implies we must be self-sufficient and bring with us everything we might need.

The only service we can consider is a small parking space nearby, generally unpaved, where we can leave our vehicle. We highly recommend bringing our own food and drink, an umbrella to protect ourselves from the sun, and, of course, a bag to collect all our waste and keep this very special corner impeccable. The philosophy here is 'take only pictures, leave only footprints'.

Best Time to Visit

El Hierro, like the rest of the Canary Islands, enjoys a subtropical climate that allows us to enjoy its beaches practically all year round. However, if we're looking for the best time to visit Playa de la Arena, we would recommend spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November). During these months, temperatures are pleasant, days are sunny, and, most importantly, the influx of tourists is lower than in the summer months. This allows us to enjoy the cove with a greater sense of intimacy and tranquility.

Summer (July and August) is also an excellent option if we don't mind warmer temperatures and a greater presence of visitors. Winter (December to March) remains mild, but we might encounter some cloudy days or a higher chance of rain, although these are usually short episodes. In any case, it's always advisable to check the weather forecast before planning our visit to ensure we enjoy this volcanic paradise to the fullest.

Despite its size and the absence of specialized services, Playa de la Arena offers a range of activities and sports for those seeking a connection with nature and the sea. Its main attraction is the calm and crystal-clear waters, ideal for:
