How to Get to Cala del Volante

It is located south of Peñíscola, within the boundaries of the Sierra de Irta Natural Park. To access it, we typically take the coastal road from Peñíscola heading south towards Alcossebre, entering the park. Signage is not always abundant, which adds to its charm as a 'secret' spot, so using GPS is recommended.

The final access to the cove usually involves a short walk from where we leave the car. There are informal parking areas along the dirt tracks that cross the sierra, but they are limited. Our recommendation is to park carefully and always respect the park's guidelines. The final stretch to the sand is a dirt path, not excessively difficult, but we do advise wearing comfortable walking shoes. The reward, upon first glimpsing its waters, is indescribable and makes the small effort worthwhile.

The Sand and Water

When we talk about Cala del Volante, we must highlight the peculiarity of its surface composition. Here you won't find the typical fine, golden sand of large beaches. Cala del Volante offers a mix of mixed sand, where coarser grains of sand are intermingled with small stones and pebbles polished by the sea. The type of ground is, therefore, mixed, which gives it a wilder, more natural character, very much in keeping with the Sierra de Irta environment. We advise wearing water shoes if you have sensitive feet, especially for entering and exiting the water.

But if there's one thing that captivates us about this cove, it's undoubtedly its waters. We are faced with a sea of astonishing clarity and transparency. The color ranges from turquoise to emerald blue, inviting us to dive right in. The absence of strong currents and the natural protection of the cove mean its waters are generally calm and temperate, ideal for a relaxing swim or for exploring the seabed. Visibility is excellent, making it a paradise for snorkeling enthusiasts, where they can observe rich Mediterranean biodiversity in its natural habitat.

We want to be very honest: this cove is characterized precisely by its pristine and wild nature, which means infrastructure is minimal or non-existent directly on the sand. Don't expect to find showers, beach bars (chiringuitos), lifeguards, or umbrella and sunbed rentals.

This is its greatest charm, but also a point to consider for our planning. The only 'service' we can consider is the possibility of informal parking nearby, though it's limited and unpaved. Therefore, our recommendation is to go well-prepared: bring our own food and drink, an umbrella if we want shade, towels, sunscreen, and everything needed for the day. There are no trash bins, so it's essential to bring a bag to collect our waste and leave the environment as we found it, or even better. The philosophy here is 'leave no trace' to preserve the beauty of this natural enclave.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the right time to visit Cala del Volante can make a difference in our experience. Based on our experience, we always recommend spring (late April, May, and early June) and early autumn (September and early October). During these months, the weather is extremely pleasant, temperatures are mild, and the waters are warm enough for swimming.

Furthermore, and perhaps most importantly for tranquility lovers, we will avoid the peak summer crowds. July and, especially, August are the months of maximum tourist influx along the entire coast, and although Cala del Volante will always be quieter than urban beaches, you will also notice an increase in visitors. If you seek maximum peace and solitude, spring and autumn offer us the chance to enjoy this paradise almost exclusively. The early morning or late afternoon hours are also magical times to visit, with spectacular light for photography.
