How to Get to Playa de Sonabia

Getting to Playa de Sonabia is part of the adventure and, although it requires a small effort, the reward is immense. If we come by car, the best option is to take the A-8 motorway and turn off at exit 173 towards Liendo. Once in the town, we follow the signs to Sonabia. It is important to know that direct vehicle access to the beach is not possible, as the aim is to preserve its natural environment. We must leave the vehicle in a designated parking area at the top, next to the road that descends towards the coast. This parking area, although often an unpaved terrain, usually has enough space, especially outside the high season. During the summer months, however, it can fill up quickly, so we recommend arriving early.

From the parking area, the path to the sand is a walk downhill. It is a well-marked trail, although with a certain slope, which takes us directly to the beach in about 5-10 minutes. This walk, surrounded by vegetation and with panoramic views of the sea, is already a prelude to the beauty that awaits us. We advise wearing comfortable footwear for the journey, as it is not a walk on asphalt. For those who prefer public transport, the options are more limited, with the car being the most practical and flexible way to access this coastal corner. However, if we are staying in the surroundings of Liendo, a pleasant bike ride or even a walk can be an excellent way to get there, enjoying the rural landscape that surrounds the beach.

The Sand and the Water

Playa de Sonabia seduces us with its fine, golden sand, incredibly soft under our feet. It is the kind of sand that invites you to take off your shoes and feel every grain, to build sandcastles with the children, or simply to lie down and relax. Its length, about 350 meters, offers enough space so that, even on busier days, we do not feel crowded. The cleanliness of the sand is remarkable, a reflection of the care taken to maintain this natural space in perfect condition, and also of the awareness of the visitors who respect it. Walking on it at sunset, with the sea breeze caressing our skin, is a truly magical experience.

As for the water, that of Playa de Sonabia is a true wonder. We are faced with crystal-clear waters, of an intense turquoise color that invites us to dive in without a second thought. The water quality is excellent, making it an ideal place for swimming and enjoying a refreshing dip. Furthermore, being a beach open to the Cantabrian Sea, the water renewal is constant, always guaranteeing impeccable purity. Although there can sometimes be some waves, especially during spring tides or strong winds, the waters are generally calm and suitable for bathing, delighting both adults and children. The water temperature, typical of the Cantabrian Sea, is cool and invigorating in summer, perfect for combating the summer heat and recharging energy. The underwater visibility is also notable, making it a small paradise for snorkeling lovers who wish to explore the marine life near the rocks.

Services and Facilities

Given the natural and semi-virgin character of Playa de Sonabia, we should not expect a large number of services or facilities like in other more urbanized beaches. And it is precisely that simplicity that gives it part of its charm. Here, the protagonist is nature in its pure state. However, we do have some essential services to ensure a comfortable and safe visit. As we have already mentioned, we have a parking area at the top, which, although not paved, serves its purpose.
