How to Get to Playa de Somocuevas

To reach this marvel, we must first head to the village of Liencres, in the municipality of Piélagos, Cantabria. Once there, we follow the signs towards the coastal area.

Access and Parking

Access to the beach is not direct by car. We must park our vehicle in a designated area, usually a dirt or improvised parking lot, located at the top of the cliffs that guard the beach. From this point, a descent on foot begins. The path is an irregular trail, with stairs in some sections, that will lead us directly to the sand. It's important to consider that this access, although passable, can be somewhat steep and is not suitable for people with reduced mobility or for baby strollers. The reward, however, is well worth the walk. Remember to wear comfortable and secure footwear for the descent and ascent.

Stepping onto the shore, we encounter fine, golden sand, incredibly soft under our feet. And we, sincerely, believe that a large part of its charm resides there. It's a beach to disconnect, to return to the essentials, and that often implies doing without certain comforts we are used to in more urbanized beaches.

Basic Services and Recommendations

At Playa de Somocuevas you will not find showers, public toilets, beach bars (chiringuitos) right on the sand, or rentals of umbrellas and sunbeds. It's a virgin beach in many aspects. However, during the high season months (summer), it usually has lifeguard services, which provides us with an important dose of safety. As mentioned earlier, there is a parking area at the top of the cliff, although it is usually informal and with limited spaces, so we recommend arriving early on days with high attendance.

Our recommendation is to come prepared. Bring your own drinks and some food, a large towel, sunscreen, and everything you need for your beach day. Don't forget a bag to take your trash with you and leave the beach as pristine as you found it. Respecting the natural environment is essential so that we can all continue to enjoy this paradise.

Playa de Somocuevas has a particular charm in every season of the year, and the 'best' time to visit it will depend a lot on what you are looking for in your experience. We have been fortunate to enjoy it at different times and it has always surprised us.

Summer: Sun, Swimming, and Vitality

If your main goal is to sunbathe, take a refreshing swim in its crystal-clear waters, and enjoy the beach atmosphere, summer (July and August) is, without a doubt, the best time. Temperatures are warmer, days are longer, and the sea is usually calmer. However, keep in mind that, being such a beautiful and well-known beach, it can be more crowded, especially on weekends. Even so, its size and access mean it never feels as crowded as other more urban beaches.

Spring and Autumn: Tranquility and Nature

For those seeking peace, tranquility, and the opportunity to connect with nature in its
