Upon arriving at Playa de Ostende, the first thing that impresses us is its expanse and the quality of its sand. It stretches for almost a kilometer, offering us plenty of space to lay out our towels without crowds, even on the busiest days. Its waters, generally calm and crystal clear, invite a refreshing swim, while the sea breeze gently caresses us, promising a day of total disconnection. It is one of those beaches that, once you know it, you know you will want to return. Its privileged location, very close to the historic center of Castro Urdiales, makes it an ideal option for those looking to combine sun and sand with exploring a charming coastal town. The truth is, we feel at home every time we set foot in this corner of Cantabria.

How to Get to Playa de Ostende

Getting to Playa de Ostende is really simple, one of the great advantages of this urban beach. We always value ease of access, especially when traveling with family or a lot of luggage. Castro Urdiales is very well connected, which greatly facilitates arrival at this idyllic coastal destination.

By Car

If you come by car, as we usually do to have more freedom, the A-8 highway (Autovía del Cantábrico) is your best ally. Whether you are coming from Bilbao (about 35-40 minutes) or from Santander (approximately 50-60 minutes), the exit towards Castro Urdiales will leave you just a step away from the town. Once in Castro, the signs to Playa de Ostende are clear and will guide you without a problem. We recommend planning your arrival early in the morning, especially during high season, to secure a good spot in the nearby parking areas. There are several parking zones, some of them paid, but the convenience of having the car close to the beach is priceless. Don't worry, there are always options, even if you sometimes have to circle around a bit.

By Public Transport

For those who prefer to leave the car at home, public transport is an excellent alternative. Castro Urdiales has bus lines connecting it with nearby major cities. From Bilbao, the company Alsa offers regular and frequent services that will drop you off at the Castro Urdiales bus station, just a few minutes' walk from the beach. Similarly, from Santander, there are also connections that will allow you to arrive comfortably. Once at the station, a pleasant walk through the town will take you directly to the shore of Ostende. It is a very comfortable and sustainable option, which we have also used on occasion, allowing us to enjoy the scenery without worries.

On Foot or by Bicycle

If you are already in Castro Urdiales, getting to Playa de Ostende is a charming walk. The beach is perfectly integrated into the urban fabric, and you can access it from different points along the promenade that borders the coast. For cycling enthusiasts, there are bike lanes that will get you there without problems, and the area has specific bike parking. We always advise taking a walk along the coast before or after a day at the beach; the views are spectacular and the sea breeze is unbeatable.

One of the aspects that captivates us most about Playa de Ostende is, without a doubt, the quality of its sand and the clarity of its waters. The sand of Ostende is fine, a true pleasure for the feet. It has that soft, golden texture we love so much, ideal for walking barefoot, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply relaxing in the sun. You won't find large stones or annoying pebbles, making it perfect for enjoyment by all ages. It is sand that warms pleasantly in the sun without burning, and comes off skin and clothes easily. We really appreciate this detail, as it makes cleaning up at the end of the day easier. Furthermore, its expanse means that, even on the busiest days, we don't feel crowded, always able to find a quiet corner for ourselves.

The Water: Cantabrian Tranquility and Freshness

As for the water, Playa de Ostende surprises us with its cleanliness and its blue-green hue. Being in a relatively sheltered bay, its waters are usually quite calm, with moderate waves that make it a safe place for swimming, even for children and those who are not fond of big waves. The water temperature, as is usual in the Cantabrian Sea, is cool but very pleasant in the summer months. We always dive in without hesitation, and the feeling of submerging in those crystal-clear waters is most revitalizing. The water quality is consistently good, which has earned it the prestigious Blue Flag on numerous occasions, a distinction that for us is synonymous with guarantee and peace of mind. Additionally, the slope of the shore is gentle, allowing you to gradually enter the sea without sudden changes.
