Upon arriving at Playa de Cuberris, the first thing that captivates us is its expanse of fine, golden sand, which gently stretches until meeting generally calm and crystal-clear waters, perfect for swimming. The setting is one of serene beauty, with protective cliffs and lush vegetation that give it a natural and peaceful air. It's a place where time seems to stand still, inviting us to disconnect from the daily hustle and immerse ourselves completely in the tranquility of the Cantabrian Sea. How to Get to Playa de Cuberris

Getting to Playa de Cuberris is relatively straightforward, which adds to its appeal. We always recommend the car as the most comfortable option for exploring the Cantabrian coast and its hidden treasures. From Santander, the provincial capital, the journey takes approximately 30-40 minutes, following the Cantabrian Motorway (A-8) towards Bilbao and then taking exits towards Ajo or Bareyo. Signage is quite clear once we approach the municipality.

Once in Bareyo or, more specifically, near Ajo, access to the beach is well signposted. We find a relatively spacious parking area nearby, which is a great advantage, especially in the summer months when visitor numbers are higher. This parking is usually paid during the high season, a small price to pay for the convenience of having the car just steps from the sand. For those who prefer public transport, options are more limited and usually require combinations of buses that would drop us in Ajo, from where the beach would be within walking distance, although perhaps a bit long with luggage. Our recommendation is always to check local bus schedules in advance if you choose this route.

The Sand and Water

Playa de Cuberris is a delight for the senses, and much of this is due to its exceptional natural characteristics. The sand is certainly one of its greatest attractions: fine and golden, a soft carpet under our feet that invites long barefoot walks or building sandcastles with the little ones. It's the kind of sand that gently sticks to the skin without being annoying and is easy to clean off, something we always appreciate.

As for the water, Cuberris's waters are generally calm and clean, with a color that varies between turquoise and emerald, depending on the sunlight. The water quality is excellent, which has earned it the Blue Flag recognition on numerous occasions, a distinction that certifies not only water cleanliness but also environmental management and beach safety. The entry into the sea is gentle and gradual, without sudden drops, making it ideal for swimming and especially safe for children. Although the Cantabrian Sea is known for its roughness, in Cuberris, thanks to its orientation and natural protection, we usually find moderate waves, perfect for enjoying a refreshing dip or for getting started in some water sports. The water temperature, as is usual in the north, is cool but very pleasant on sunny summer days, offering a welcome relief from the heat.

We like that, despite its natural beauty, functionality and the well-being of those who choose it for the day have not been neglected.

• Lifeguard Service: During the high season, the beach has a well-equipped lifeguard service, which gives us great peace of mind, especially if we go with children. Their presence is essential to ensure safety in the water.
• Showers and Toilets/WCs: We have showers to wash off the sand and salt before heading home, as well as public toilets, always a plus when we spend several hours at the beach. These services are usually well-maintained.
• Chiringuitos (Beach Bars): There's nothing like enjoying a refreshment, an ice cream, or even a light meal without having to go too far from the sand. In Cuberris, we find several chiringuitos right on the beach or nearby, where we can recharge and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere with sea views.
• Parking: As already mentioned, the availability of parking is a strong point. Although it may be paid in summer, the convenience of having it nearby more than compensates.
• Cleaning: The beach is kept clean and well-maintained, a joint effort between local authorities and the users themselves. Trash bins are conveniently located to encourage waste collection.
