How to get to Playa de Canallave

Getting to Playa de Canallave is relatively easy, and the transport options allow us to plan our visit comfortably. We always recommend the car as the most practical option, as it gives us the freedom to explore the surroundings and carry everything needed for a perfect beach day. From Santander, the Cantabrian capital, the journey is just 20-25 minutes, taking the A-67 highway and then turning off towards Liencres and the Parque Natural de las Dunas de Liencres. The signage to the area of the Valdearenas and Canallave beaches is quite clear, which makes orientation much easier.

Parking

One of the great advantages of this area is the existence of extensive free parking zones, especially near the main access to the dunes and the beach. During the summer months, and particularly on weekends, these car parks can fill up quickly, so we advise arriving early to secure a good spot. Once parked, access to the beach is via wooden walkways that cross the dune system, allowing us to enjoy a short walk before reaching the shore, while also contributing to the conservation of this fragile ecosystem. It's a detail we greatly appreciate, as it demonstrates a commitment to preserving the natural environment of Playa de Canallave.

Public transport

Although public transport is an option, it is less direct. There are bus lines connecting Santander with Liencres. Once in Liencres, the distance to the beach is approximately 2-3 kilometers, which would require a pleasant walk or taking a taxi. For us, who often carry surfboards or picnic coolers, the car remains the preferred choice. However, for a lighter getaway, walking from Liencres offers us the opportunity to contemplate the landscape and rural beauty of Piélagos before reaching the coast.

The sand and the water

The sand of Playa de Canallave is, simply put, a delight. Fine, golden, and soft to the touch, it invites us to walk barefoot and feel the connection with the earth under our feet. It's the perfect type of sand for building castles, for sunbathing, or simply for enjoying a long walk along the shore. Its expanse, which naturally merges with that of Valdearenas, offers us generous space even on the busiest days, which is always a plus. We love the feeling of spaciousness it conveys, allowing us to find our own corner of peace.

Their transparency is remarkable, and on calm days we can appreciate the greenish and bluish tones reflecting the sky and surrounding vegetation. It's clean water, ideal for swimming, although we must always be cautious of currents and waves, especially if we are not used to the strength of the northern sea. The water quality is usually excellent, a factor that contributes to the beach holding the Blue Flag most years, a distinction that gives us confidence and peace of mind when enjoying a dip.

This beach in Piélagos is a true paradise for surf lovers, with conditions that are often ideal for both beginners and more experienced surfers. The breaks are consistent and offer different peaks along the beach, allowing space for everyone. We, who are board enthusiasts, always find here an opportunity to glide over the crests and feel the adrenaline. It's a spectacle to see the surfers in action, and if you haven't dared yet, this is an excellent place to try it, with several surf schools operating in the area.
