How to Get to Playa de Varvara

Getting to Playa de Varvara is relatively straightforward, although we recommend using your own vehicle for greater comfort and flexibility, given its somewhat secluded nature. The beach is located south of the city of Burgas, about 70-80 kilometers away, and south of Tsarevo, a larger town with more services, about 15 kilometers away.

By Car

From Burgas, the most direct route is to take the E87 highway heading south, which runs along the coast. Follow this main road until you pass Tsarevo and Kiten. Shortly before reaching the town of Ahtopol, you'll find a signposted turnoff towards the village of Varvara. Once in the village, signs will easily guide you to the beach. The journey is picturesque, offering spectacular views of the Black Sea and the mountainous landscapes of the Strandzha Natural Park. At the beach itself or nearby, you'll find informal parking areas to leave your car without major difficulty, although it can be busier during the high season.

Public Transport

If you prefer public transport, you can take a bus from the central station in Burgas to Tsarevo. From Tsarevo, the frequency of buses to Varvara is lower, so you might consider a local taxi for the last leg. It's a more economical option, but less flexible, especially if you plan to explore the surrounding area.

The Sand and Water

One of the biggest attractions of Playa de Varvara is undoubtedly the quality of its sand and the purity of its waters. We are looking at a beach with fine sand, of a soft golden hue that invites you to walk barefoot and build sandcastles. The texture is pleasant, and it extends for its approximately 250 meters in length, offering enough space to relax without feeling crowded.

The waters of the Black Sea in this area are notably crystal clear and clean, with shades ranging from turquoise blue in the shallow areas to a deeper blue further out to sea. Calm is usually the dominant theme, making it an ideal place for a relaxing and safe swim. The entrance to the sea is gentle and gradual, perfect for those who are not expert swimmers or for children to enjoy without worries. Underwater visibility is often very good, allowing you to observe the local marine life, making snorkeling a rewarding activity for the curious who bring their own equipment.

Services and Facilities

As we've already mentioned, Playa de Varvara is characterized by its natural and less developed atmosphere. This means that the available services, although sufficient to enjoy a day at the beach, are more basic and in tune with its relaxed character. Don't expect large luxury infrastructures, but rather the essentials for your comfort.

We highlight the presence of some chiringuitos or small beach bars. These establishments usually offer refreshing drinks, ice cream, and some simple food options, like sandwiches or salads, ideal for a light lunch by the sea. It's also common to find sunbed and umbrella rental services, which will allow you to enjoy the sun and shade without having to carry your own equipment. Although the lifeguard service may be seasonal and not as widespread as on more touristy beaches, it is usually present during the summer months to ensure the safety of swimmers.

Additionally, you'll find showers to rinse off the salt and sand before returning to your accommodation, and basic bathrooms/WCs. As we've already noted, there are parking areas nearby, which facilitates access by car. The simplicity of its services helps maintain the rustic and authentic charm of this Bulgarian beach.

Best Time to Visit

Choosing the right time to visit Playa de Varvara can make a big difference in your experience. We advise you to consider your personal preferences regarding climate and crowd levels.

Summer (June to August)

The high season runs during the months of June, July, and August. During this period, temperatures are warm, with highs usually around 25-30°C, and the water temperature is ideal for swimming, often exceeding 24°C. It's the time when all beach services are fully operational, including the chiringuitos, umbrella rentals, and lifeguard service. However, it's also when the beach receives the most visitors, although it never gets as crowded as other more well-known Black Sea destinations. If you're looking for guaranteed sun and a lively (but not noisy) atmosphere, summer is your best option.
